The Hmong people are a major ethnic group in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul area. As of 2000 there were 40,707 ethnic Hmong in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. Hmong Americans
Hmong Americans ( RPA: ''Hmoob Mes Kas'', Pahawh Hmong: "") are Americans of Hmong ancestry. Many Hmong Americans immigrated to the United States as refugees in the late 1970s. Over half of the Hmong population from Laos left the country, or attempted to leave, in 1975, at the culmination of the Laotian Civil War. Thousands of Hmong were evacuated or escaped on their own to Hmong refugee camps in Thailand. About 90% of those who made it to refugee camps in Thailand were ultimately resettled in the United States. The rest, about 8 to 10%, resettled in countries including Canada, France, the Netherlands, and Australia. Hmong College Prep Academy
Hmong College Prep Academy (HCPA) is a charter school in St. Paul, Minnesota that has grades K-12. HCPA is open to all students. It has a large population of Hmong American and Karen American students. History HCPA started in 2004 in Minneapolis as a grade 8-10 school. In 2006, HCPA moved to the Midway neighborhood of St. Paul. The first graduating class was in 2007. Also, in 2007, Phase II of the school's expansion plan began with additional buildings being constructed. A new high school was built in 2013, signifying the start of HCPA's Phase III expansion. Mee Moua ( RPA: Qaav Ruom, born June 30, 1969 in Xieng Khouang, Laos), is an American politician, and is the former president and executive director of the Asian Americans Advancing Justice -AAJC (Advancing Justice-AAJC) She served as the vice president for strategic impact initiatives at the Asian & Islander American Health Forum (APIAHF) from 2011–12, and as a member of the Minnesota state senate from 2002-11. On February 3, 2017, Moua announced her departure from AAJC to "spend more time with her family, for her children and their future, and being the right kind of mom for them." Cy Thao
Cy Thao (born March 2, 1972) is a Laos, Laotian-born Hmong American politician who served as a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2003 to 2011. Early life and education In 1975, Thao's family fled from Communists in Laos and lived in a refugee camp in Thailand until moving to the United States in 1980. Shortly thereafter, he joined the Boy Scouts of America and attained the rank of Eagle Scout (Boy Scouts of America), Eagle Scout. He credits Scouting with helping him blend into American society and teaching him the values of community obligation. Thao is a graduate of the University of Minnesota Morris (UMM). Career A Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, Democrat, Thao was first elected in 2002. He did not seek re-election in 2010, and left office on January 3, 2011.
