The History of rugby league in South Africa goes back as far as the 1950s. The 1990s brought about the establishment of the South African Rugby Football League to promote amateur rugby league. Failed promotion - 1950s In 1953, a committee was formed, headed by Mr. Ludwig Japhet, for the sole purpose of promotion of rugby league. No doubt, the decision to form such a committee was the lure of potential sponsorship and gate takings that playing rugby league in new areas or against other nations would undoubtedly bring to the game. Mr. Ludwig Japhet held a meeting with Mr. Bill Fallowfield in December of that year to discuss the possibilities of rugby league promotion in which South Africa was discussed. Not all attempts were in the interest of South Africans; rather an interest in financial windfall. Others took to the townships and promoted the league at the grass roots, which saw some of the most successful periods of rugby league in South Africa. The game has changed over 50 years of involvement in South Africa and today is played by a small number of teams in three competitions—the Rhino Cup, Protea Cup and Western Province Rugby League—which are administered by the South African Rugby League. WA Reds
The Western Reds were a rugby league football club based in Perth, Western Australia. Founded in 1992 as the Western Reds, they entered into the Australian Rugby League competition in 1995 before defecting to the rival Super League competition in 1997, where they rebranded themselves as the Perth Reds. Bob Abbott (November 1, 1932 – March 23, 2010) was an American lawyer and jurist who served as a justice of the Kansas Supreme Court from September 1, 1990, to June 6, 2003. Early life and education Abbott was born in Hodgeman County, Kansas. He earned an associate of arts degree from Dodge City Junior College, a Bachelor of Science from Emporia State University in 1956, and a law degree from Washburn University School of Law in 1960. He later in 1986 received a Masters in Law from the University of Virginia. Career Abbot served in the United States Air Force, where he was a navigator on an Douglas C-124 Globemaster II. Paul Kehoma Matete (12 December 1949 – 17 June 2020) was a New Zealand rugby league footballer, and coach who represented New Zealand national rugby league team, New Zealand in the 1975 Rugby League World Cup, 1975 World Cup. Dave Brown (rugby League, Born 1913)
David Michael Brown (4 April 1913 – 23 February 1974) was one of Australia's greatest rugby league footballers. Brown in his distinctive headgear was said to be one of the most admired sights in the game during the 1930s. He won two premierships with Easts and scored so many points, tries and goals and established so many records (some may never be bettered) that he is referred to as "the Bradman of league". In 2003 Brown was inducted into the Australian Rugby League Hall of Fame and in 2008 he was named in the New South Wales rugby league team of the century. Wakefield Trinity is a professional rugby league club in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England, that plays in the Super League. One of the original twenty-two clubs that formed the Northern Rugby Football Union in 1895, between 1999 and 2016 the club was known as Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.
