History Of Timor-Leste
East Timor is a country in Southeast Asia and Oceania known as Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste. The country comprises the eastern half of the island of Timor and the nearby islands of Atauro Island, Atauro and Jaco. The first inhabitants are thought to be descendant of Australoid and Melanesians, Melanesian peoples. The Portuguese Empire, Portuguese began to trade with Timor by the early 16th century and Portuguese Timor, colonised it throughout the mid-century. Skirmishing with the Dutch East Indies, Dutch in the region eventually resulted in an 1859 treaty for which Portugal ceded the western half of the island. It comprises the eastern half of the island of Timor, the exclave of Oecusse on the island's north-western half, and the minor islands of Atauro and Jaco.
