History Of Ipswich Town F.C.
Ipswich Town Football Club is an English association football club based in Ipswich, Suffolk, which was formed in 1878. The side played amateur football until 1936 when the club turned professional and was elected to the Southern League. Ipswich Town were elected into the Third Division South of the Football League in place of Gillingham on 30 May 1938. The club experienced league success during the early 1960s under the guidance of Alf Ramsey, winning the First Division title in 1961–62, one season after winning promotion from the Second Division. Two decades later, under the guidance of Bobby Robson, the club achieved success both in the FA Cup in 1978 and in European competition, winning the UEFA Cup in 1981. Success at Ipswich for Ramsey and Robson led to both men managing the England national football team. Portman Road
Portman Road is a football stadium in Ipswich, Suffolk, England, which has been the home ground of Ipswich Town F.C. since 1884. The stadium has also hosted many England youth international matches, and one senior England friendly international match, against Croatia in 2003. It staged several other sporting events, including athletics meetings and international hockey matches, musical concerts and Christian events. The stadium underwent significant redevelopments in the early 2000s, which increased the capacity from 22,600 to a current figure of 29,673, making it the largest-capacity football ground in East Anglia. Broomhill Park
Broomhill Park is a semi-natural woodland park between Sherrington Road and Valley Road in Ipswich, Suffolk, England. In older times it was called Broom Hill. The park contains many fine historic oaks and an abundance of Scots Pines. The park contains Broomhill Pool, a Grade II listed lido, which the Broomhill Pool Trust is campaigning to re-open. History For many years this was a privately owned hilltop wood on the outskirts of Ipswich called Broom Hill. In the 19th and early 20th century the land between the hill and Norwich Road was sold for housing. Broom Hill Road for example was built in 1888. In 1925 George Sherrington sold Broom Hill to Ipswich Borough Council. A ring road around Ipswich was built in 1926 and Valley Road then divided the woodland in half, with a larger piece to the North of Valley Road, and a smaller piece to the South. Thomas Cobbold (diplomat)
Thomas Clement Cobbold CB (22 July 1833 – 21 November 1883) was a British diplomat and Conservative Party politician. A member of the Cobbold brewery family, he was the son of John Cobbold, Member of Parliament (MP) for Ipswich, and his wife Lucy, daughter of Reverend Henry Patteson. His elder brother John Cobbold was also Member of Parliament for Ipswich while his younger brother Nathaniel was the grandfather of Cameron Cobbold, 1st Baron Cobbold. Cobbold was educated at Charterhouse. He joined the Diplomatic Service and served as Chargé d'Affaires in Baden-Baden, Rio de Janeiro and Lisbon. In 1876 he succeeded his elder brother John as Member of Parliament for Ipswich, a seat he held until his death. Between 1878 and 1883 he was also the first President of Ipswich Town Football Club. The 1990 FIFA World Cup was the 14th FIFA World Cup, a quadrennial football tournament for men's senior national teams. It was held from 8 June to 8 July 1990 in Italy, the second country to host the event for a second time (the first being Mexico in 1986). Teams representing 116 national football associations entered and qualification began in April 1988. 22 teams qualified from this process, along with host nation Italy and defending champions Argentina. The 1966 FIFA World Cup was the eighth FIFA World Cup, a quadrennial football tournament for men's senior national teams. It was played in England from 11 July to 30 July 1966. The England national football team defeated West Germany 4-2 in the final to win the tournament. The final had finished at 2–2 after 90 minutes and went to extra time, when Geoff Hurst scored two goals to complete his hat-trick, the first (and , only) to be scored in a men's World Cup final.
