Historic Party
The Historic Party (Portuguese: ''Partido Histórico'') was a Portuguese political party active between 1852 and 1876. It was founded by the 1st Duke of Loulé as new opposition to the new Regenerator Party, which had consolidated the Cartista political forces in the wake of the Regeneration, a military insurrection which overthrew the Septembrist government of Costa Cabral. It integrated the opposition to the governments of the 1st Duke of Saldanha, and won a majority in the first election it contested in 1856. It was led from its inception in the wake of the defeat of the Progressive Historic Party in the 1852 election, by the 1st Duke of Loulé, who continued to represent the party until his death in 1875, leading several Historic governments. Nuno José Severo De Mendoça Rolim De Moura Barreto, 1st Duke Of Loulé
Dom. Nuno José Severo de Mendoça Rolim de Moura Barreto, 2nd Marquis of Loulé, 9th Count of Vale de Reis, (6 November 1804 – 22 May 1875), was an important Portuguese politician during the period of Constitutional Monarchy. He became the 1st Duke of Loulé in 1862. Family He was a son of the 1st Marquess of Loule, Agostinho Domingos José de Mendoça Rolim de Moura Barreto. In 1827, he married Infanta Ana de Jesus Maria, younger daughter of King John VI of Portugal. With this marriage, Nuno José Severo become brother-in-law of King Miguel I of Portugal and Emperor Pedro I of Brazil, and paternal uncle of Queen Maria II of Portugal and Emperor Pedro II of Brazil. The Reformist Party (Portuguese: ''Partido Reformista'') was a Portuguese political party created as a breakaway from the Historic Party following an ideological split over the Janeirinha, which had overthrown the government of 1st Duke of Ávila. Those who supported the Janeirinha formed the Reformist Party, whilst those who opposed it stayed with the Historic Party. The first leader of the party was António Alves Martins who led the movement until it solidified into a full fledged party in 1869 under the abolitionist, the 1st Marquis of Sá da Bandeira, who led the party until its dissolution. The Ávilist faction of the party broke away in 1870 in support of the 1st Duke of Ávila, but merged with the Regenerator Party only 4 years later.
