His Nibs (film)
''His Nibs'' is a 1921 American comedy film directed by Gregory La Cava and starring Chic Sale and Colleen Moore. Plot The Slippery Elm Picture Palace screens the film ''He Fooled ’Em All'' as various rural characters watch. The owner, operator, and projectionist is "His Nibs". He tells the audience that he has cut the titles from the film but will explain the action. "The Boy" (Sale) leaves a small town in the film-within-the-film to get rich in the city, but he is swindled out of his money, his clothes are stolen, and he is forced to become a dishwasher to pay his rent. "The Girl" (Moore) and The Girl's father (Dowling) are talked into visiting the city by a swindler, but luckily they end up at the hotel where "The Boy" is working, and he disrupts the plot. All this is explained by "His Nibs" as the film shows, "His Nibs" offering his own commentary on the action as the story advances. Arthur Hoerl
Arthur Hoerl (December 17, 1891 – February 6, 1968) was an American screenwriter and film director. Hoerl was born in New York, son of Louis Hoerl, a German immigrant silver polisher, and Teresa Hoerl. Arthur completed three years of high school, according to the 1940 US Census. He wrote for 150 films between 1921 and 1968. One of his best known credits is co-writer for the film ''Tell Your Children'' (1936) which is now known as ''Reefer Madness''. For Broadway, 1932, he wrote the play ''A Few Wild Oats.'' He also directed four films between 1932 and 1934. Hoerl died in Hollywood, California. The UCLA Film & Television Archive is a visual arts organization focused on the preservation, study, and appreciation of film and television, based at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). ''The Devil's Claim'' is a 1920 American silent drama film starring Sessue Hayakawa and Colleen Moore. A print of this film survives. Story As summarized in a film publication, Akbar Khan, a novelist in New York, uses his love affairs as inspiration for his books. His current affair is with Indora, a Persian girl. However, the passion has left the relationship and he casts her out. Social worker Virginia Crosby comes to her aid and pretends to fall for Khan. He is inspired to write about "The Devil’s Trademark" (this was the working title of the film), an adaption of a serial for a popular magazine. The film flashes to his vision of the story, which is set in Paris with Khan as the hero Hassan. Hassan's companion in the story is a beautiful Hindu woman.
