Hirobumi Watanabe
is a Japanese film director and actor. He writes the scripts for and performs as an actor in his films, while also sometimes acting in the films of other directors. Career Watanabe was born in Ōtawara, Tochigi Prefecture, and attended the Japan Institute of the Moving Image. He studied under Daisuke Tengan (son of Shohei Imamura) and in 2008 won the grand prize at the 9th Fuji Film Lovers Festival with his graduation film, ''A Light Pig of August''. In 2013, he formed the production company Foolish Piggies Films in Ōtawara with his brother Yūji Watanabe, who produces and composes the music for his films. His 2016 film, ''Poolsideman'', won the Japanese Cinema Splash Best Picture Award at the 29th Tokyo International Film Festival as well as the Nippon Visions Jury Award at the 2017 Nippon Connection. Tokyo International Film Festival
The is a film festival established in 1985. The event was held biennially from 1985 to 1991 and annually thereafter. Along with the Shanghai International Film Festival, it is one of Asia's competitive film festivals, and is considered to be the largest film festival in Asia and the only Japanese festival accredited by the FIAPF. The awards handed out during the festival have changed throughout its existence, but the Tokyo Grand Prix, handed to the best film, has stayed as the top award. Nippon Connection is a festival for Japanese film which takes place in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, every year in early summer. The festival is organized by the nonprofit organization “Nippon Connection e.V.”. Nippon Connection has become the biggest platform for contemporary Japanese film worldwide, with about 17,000 participants in 2019. The 22nd festival edition will take place May 24 to 29, 2022. History In 1999 two German students of film studies, Marion Klomfass and Holger Ziegler, decided to show some Japanese films at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main. Mark Schilling (born 1949) is an American film critic, journalist, translator, and author based in Tokyo, Japan. He has written for ''The Japan Times'', ''Variety'', and ''Screen International''. Biography Schilling began working for ''The Japan Times'' in 1989. He has been an occasional commentator for NHK's English broadcasts of sumo tournaments since they began in 1992.
