His Majesty's hired armed lugger ''Black Joke'' was a lugger of ten 12-pounder carronades and 108 tons burthen that entered into the service of the Royal Navy on 22 May 1808.Winfield (2008), p.394. Lieutenant James Leach, late of , captained ''Black Joke'' on a special service to the Spanish coast before taking command of the bomb vessel on the Downs station. Lieutenant Moses Cannadey (or Cannady) became ''Black Joke''s captain after having been captain of ''Pickle'', which he had wrecked on 27 July 1808. On 15 May 1809 ''Black Joke'', under Cannadey, captured ''San Buona Ventura''. This was probably the Spanish lugger ''Buena Ventura'', which had been sailing from Bayonne to Bilbao and which ''Black Joke'' sent into Plymouth on the 23rd. Hired Armed Vessels
During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the Royal Navy made use of a considerable number of hired armed vessels. These were generally smaller vessels, often cutters and luggers, that the Navy used for duties ranging from carrying and passengers to convoy escort, particularly in British coastal waters, and reconnaissance.Winfield (2008), p.387. Doctrine The Navy Board usually hired the vessel complete with master and crew rather than bareboat. Contracts were for a specified time or on an open-ended monthly hire basis. During periods of peace, such as the period between the Treaty of Amiens and the commencement of the Napoleonic Wars, the Admiralty returned the vessels to their owners, only to rehire many on the outbreak of war. HMS Pomone (1805)
HMS ''Pomone'' was a 38-gun ''Leda''-class fifth rate of the Royal Navy launched in 1805. She saw action during the Napoleonic Wars, primarily in the Mediterranean while under the command of Captain Robert Barrie. She was wrecked off The Needles, part of the Isle of Wight, in 1811. The wreck is a Protected Wreck managed by Historic England. Service ''Pomone'' was commissioned in February 1805 under Captain William Lobb for Channel Service. Under his command she took a smuggler and two privateers, of which only the first privateer is reported to have put up enough resistance to sustain casualties. On 6 May ''Pomone'' captured the smuggling vessel ''Fortune''. On 5 November 1805, ''Pomone'' captured the Spanish privateer ''Golondrina'', a lugger of four guns and with a crew of 29 men, on the coast of Spain. Robert Barrie
Rear-Admiral Sir Robert Barrie KCB, KCH (5 May 1774 – 7 June 1841) was a British officer of the Royal Navy noted for his service in the War of 1812. He was helped early in his naval career by the patronage of his uncle, Sir Alan Gardner, who arranged for him to take part in the Vancouver Expedition. When the Pacific Coast was explored, he had served as a midshipman with Captain Vancouver in 1791. Career Barrie served in European waters from 1801 to 1811. He was mentioned in dispatches for his gallant conduct in a fight with a French squadron when, as First Lieutenant of ''Bourdelais'', "though dangerously wounded, he had disdained to quit the deck". Barrie then commanded a number of ships during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. George Gordon Byron, 6th Baron Byron (22 January 1788 – 19 April 1824), known simply as Lord Byron, was an English romantic poet and peer. The hired armed cutter ''Black Joke'' was a cutter that served the Royal Navy from 12 January 1795 to 19 October 1801. In 1799 she was renamed ''Suworow'', and under that name she captured numerous prizes before she was paid off after the Treaty of Amiens. Walcheren Expedition
The Walcheren Campaign ( ) was an unsuccessful British expedition to the Netherlands in 1809 intended to open another front in the Austrian Empire's struggle with France during the War of the Fifth Coalition. Sir John Pitt, 2nd Earl of Chatham, was the commander of the expedition, with the missions of capturing Flushing and Antwerp in the Netherlands and enabling navigation of the Scheldt River. Lugger
A lugger is a sailing vessel defined by its rig, using the lug sail on all of its one or several masts. They were widely used as working craft, particularly off the coasts of France, England, Ireland and Scotland. Luggers varied extensively in size and design. Many were undecked, open boats, some of which operated from beach landings (such as Hastings or Deal). Others were fully decked craft (typified by the Zulu and many other sailing drifters). Some larger examples might carry lug topsails. Luggers were used extensively for smuggling from the middle of the 18th century onwards; their fast hulls and powerful rigs regularly allowed them to outpace any Revenue vessel in service. ''Proserpine'' was a 38-gun of the French Navy launched in 1785 that captured on 13 June 1796. The Admiralty commissioned ''Proserpine'' into the Royal Navy as the fifth rate, HMS ''Amelia''.
