Hiram McCullough
Hiram McCullough (September 26, 1813 – March 4, 1885) was a United States House of Representatives, U.S. Congressman from Maryland who served two terms from 1865 to 1869. McCullough served in the Maryland Senate from 1845 to 1851. He also served in the Maryland House of Delegates from 1880 to 1881 and served as the Speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates in 1880. Biography Born near Elkton, Maryland, McCullough pursued an academic course at Elkton Academy and later studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1837, commencing practice in Elkton. He served in the Maryland Senate from 1845 until 1851, and was an unsuccessful candidate in 1850 for election to the Thirty-second Congress. In 1850, he was appointed one of the codifiers of the laws of Maryland. Philadelphia, Wilmington And Baltimore Railroad
The Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad (PW&B) was an American railroad that operated independently from 1836 to 1881. It was formed in 1836 by the merger of four state-chartered railroads in three Middle Atlantic states to create a single line between Philadelphia and Baltimore. In 1881, the PW&B was purchased by the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR), which was at the time the nation's largest railroad. In 1902, the PRR merged it into its Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington Railroad. The right-of-way laid down by the PW&B line is still in use today as part of Amtrak's Northeast Corridor and the Maryland Department of Transportation's MARC commuter passenger system from Baltimore to Maryland's northeast corner. Fetter Schrier Hoblitzell (October 7, 1838 – May 2, 1900) was an American politician and Congressman from Maryland. Biography Born in Cumberland, Maryland, Hoblitzell attended primary school and graduated from the Allegany Academy of Cumberland. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1859, and commenced practice in Baltimore, Maryland. During the American Civil War, Hoblitzell served as a private in the First Maryland Regiment of Infantry of the Confederate Army. After the war, Hoblitzell resumed the practice of law and served as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates in 1870 and 1876. He was reelected in 1878 and served as speaker of the house. He was later elected as a Democrat to the Forty-seventh and Forty-eighth Congresses, serving from March 4, 1881, to March 3, 1885. Samuel Hambleton (January 8, 1812 – December 9, 1886) was an American politician from Maryland. He served as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates, representing Talbot County from 1834 to 1835 and in 1854. He also served in the Maryland Senate in 1844. He served as a U.S. Representative from Maryland from 1869 to 1873. Maryland's 1st congressional district encompasses the entire Eastern Shore of Maryland, including Salisbury, as well as parts of Baltimore, Harford, and Carroll counties; it is the largest congressional district in the state geographically, covering 12 counties (in whole or part), for a total of 3,653 square miles.
