Hip-hop Dance
Hip hop dance is a range of street dance styles primarily performed to hip hop music or that have evolved as part of hip hop culture. It is influenced by a wide range of styles that were created in the 1970s and made popular by dance crews in the United States. The television show ''Soul Train'' and the 1980s films '' Breakin''', '' Beat Street'', and ''Wild Style'' showcased these crews and dance styles in their early stages; therefore, giving hip-hop dance mainstream exposure. The dance industry responded with a commercial, studio-based version of hip-hop—sometimes called "new style"—and a hip-hop influenced style of jazz dance called "jazz-funk". Classically trained dancers developed these studio styles in order to create choreography from the hip-hop dances that were performed on the street. Breakdancing, also called breaking or b-boying/b-girling, is an athletic style of street dance originating from the African Americans, African American and Puerto Rican Americans, Puerto Rican communities in the United States. While diverse in the amount of variation available in the dance, breakdancing mainly consists of four kinds of movement: toprock, downrock, power moves and Freeze (b-boy move), freezes. ''America's Best Dance Crew'', often abbreviated as ''ABDC'', was an American competitive dance reality television series that features both national and international dance crews. The show was produced by singer, record producer, and former ''American Idol'' judge Randy Jackson. The series premiered on February 7, 2008, on MTV. It was originally developed for NBC as ''World Moves''. The show was hosted by actor Mario Lopez, and featured television personality Layla Kayleigh as the backstage correspondent. The judging panel consisted of hip hop recording artist Lil Mama, singer-songwriter JC Chasez, and dancer Dominic "D-Trix" Sandoval. Former judges included hip hop choreographer Shane Sparks and R&B singer Omarion. After an initial seventh season run, ''America's Best Dance Crew'' was cancelled in 2012 due to declining ratings. ''StreetDance 3D'' (also called ''StreetDance'') is a 2010 British 3D dance comedy-drama film which was released on 21 May 2010. The film was released in RealD 3D, XpanD 3D, and Dolby 3D with Max Giwa and Dania Pasquini directing it. ''Britain's Got Talent'' stars George Sampson, Diversity and Flawless made their debut appearances to the big screen. The soundtrack to the film was written and performed by alternative acts N-Dubz, Tinie Tempah, Lightbulb Thieves, and Chipmunk. The Grind (TV Series)
''The Grind'' was a dance music show broadcast on the cable television station MTV between 1992 and 1997. It replaced ''Club MTV'', and featured people dancing to music tracks in a studio, linked by various hosts, including Eric Nies (fresh from '' The Real World: New York'') and DJ Jackie Christie. While ''Club MTV'' was mostly Dance, House and Freestyle, ''The Grind'' featured Hip-Hop and Rap with an occasional Dance hit. The show spawned a number of aerobics and workout videotapes. When MTV moved to its current location at 1515 Broadway, they lost the studio where ''Club MTV'' and ''The Grind'' were originally taped and episodes were taped on the roof of the building. ''Wild Style'' is a 1983 American hip hop film directed and produced by Charlie Ahearn. Regarded as the first hip hop motion picture, it includes appearances by seminal figures such as Fab Five Freddy, Lee Quiñones, Lady Pink, The Rock Steady Crew, The Cold Crush Brothers, Queen Lisa Lee of Zulu Nation, Grandmaster Flash and ZEPHYR. ''Beat Street'' is a 1984 American drama dance film featuring New York City hip hop culture of the early 1980s. ''Breakin''' (also known as ''Breakdance'' in the United Kingdom and ''Break Street '84'' in other regions) is a 1984 American breakdancing-themed musical film directed by Joel Silberg and written by Charles Parker and Allen DeBevoise based on a story by Parker, DeBevoise and Gerald Scaife.
