Hanne Hiob
Hanne Hiob (12 March 1923 – 23 June 2009) was a German actress. Life and career Hiob was born as Hanne Marianne Brecht in Munich, the daughter of the writer Bertolt Brecht by his wife, opera singer and actress Marianne Zoff (1893-1984). In February 1928, Zoff had a daughter, Ursula Lingen, by German actor Theo Lingen. In September 1928, Brecht and Zoff divorced; Zoff married Lingen later that year. Hanne Brecht studied dance at the Vienna State Opera and worked as a dancer and an actress in Salzburg, Austria. Among other parts, she played the leading role in Brecht's ''Señora Carrar's Rifles'' and in 1959 in ''Saint Joan of the Stockyards'' under the direction of Gustaf Gründgens. While searching in Rome for some documents at the request of the Swedish Court (1649), he became friends with Abba Gorgoryos, a monk from the Ethiopian province of Amhara, and acquired from him an intimate knowledge of the Ethiopian language of Amhara. In 1652 he entered the service of the duke of Saxe-Gotha, in which he continued until 1678, when he retired to Frankfurt am Main. In 1683 he visited England to promote a cherished scheme for establishing trade with Ethiopia, but his efforts were unsuccessful, chiefly due to the resistance of the authorities of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. Reception When the English translation of the book was reviewed in ''The New York Times'' in 1931, the reviewer compared it to the author's previous works: "Roth's development as a novelist has shown a gradual abandonment of problem and political themes such as filled ''Rechts und Links''. Im ic''Job'', finally, he seems to admit that literature must follow upon, not lead, social change; and consequently he has turned his eyes inward upon his spiritual self, and backward upon tradition. He has written a work of the type that literary chroniclers like to call pure." The critic wrote ab ...
