Hint (musician)
Hint is musician Jonathan James, hailing from Sussex in the UK. His music has been released on independent record labels and his catalogue includes work which has found favour amongst DJs and fans from various underground music scenes. Early career Hint's first releases were on the Deep Water label - an imprint based in Leicester in the UK. Shortly after the first promos of his debut EP ''Beau Selector'' were circulated amongst DJs, Hint was invited to record a Peel Session at the BBC's Maida Vale Studios, which was broadcast in May 2002. Hint subsequently signed to Bristol-based label Hombre Recordings and began work on his debut album '' Portakabin Fever''. The album was so called because it was written and recorded in a mobile home by James using an Akai MPC, guitar, bass and keyboards. The songs were then mixed with engineer 7-Stu-7 at State of Art - the Bristol-based studio owned by Geoff Barrow of Portishead. Once the album was complete, including cover art and a ...

Hints, Staffordshire
Hints is a small village and civil parish between Lichfield and Tamworth in southeastern Staffordshire, within Lichfield local government district. The village is on the line of Watling Street, which was formerly the A5, but the A5 now runs in a cutting north of the village. The name of the parish council is ''Hints with Canwell''. The parish church is dedicated to St Bartholomew. The name Hints appears to derive from the Welsh word ''hynt'', meaning 'a road' (referring to Watling Street). This suggests that the area was occupied by Welsh speakers until at least the late 6th century, when most of the Midlands had been occupied by the English.Gelling, M. (1978) ''Signposts to the Past''  p.101 The centre of Hints is situated 200 metres north of Bourne Brook (aka Black Brook), a western tributary of the River Tame, and nearby villages include Hopwas, Weeford and Drayton Bassett Drayton Bassett is a village and civil parish since 1974 in Lichfield District in Staffordsh ...

Font Hinting
Font hinting (also known as instructing) is the use of mathematical instructions to adjust the display of an outline font so that it lines up with a rasterized grid. At low screen resolutions, hinting is critical for producing clear, legible text. It can be accompanied by antialiasing and (on liquid crystal displays) subpixel rendering for further clarity. Overview For the purpose of on-screen text display, font hinting designates which primary pixels are interpolated to more clearly render a font. Hints are usually created in a font editor during the typeface design process and embedded in the font. A font can be hinted either automatically (through processed algorithms based on the character outlines) or set manually. Most font editors are able to do automatic hinting, and this approach is suitable for many fonts. However, high-quality commercial fonts are often manually hinted to provide the sharpest appearance on computer displays. Verdana is one example of a font that cont ...

Hint (SQL)
In various SQL implementations, a hint is an addition to the SQL standard that instructs the database engine on how to execute the query. For example, a hint may tell the engine to use or not to use an index (even if the query optimizer would decide otherwise). Implementation Different database engines use different approaches in implementing hints. * MySQL uses its own extension to the SQL standard, where a table name may be followed by , or keywords. * Oracle implements hints by using specially-crafted comments in the query that begin with a symbol, thus not affecting SQL compatibility. * EDB Postgres Advanced Server (a proprietary version of PostgreSQL from EnterpriseDB) offers hints compatible with those of Oracle. * Microsoft SQL Server offers hints via the keyword See also * Query optimizer * Query plan In general, a query is a form of questioning, in a line of inquiry. Query may also refer to: Computing and technology * Query, a precise request for information ...

Hierarchical INTegration
Hierarchical INTegration, or HINT for short, is a computer benchmark that ranks a computer system as a whole (i.e. the entire computer instead of individual components). It measures the full range of performance, mostly based on the amount of work a computer can perform over time. A system with a very fast processor would likely be rated poorly if the buses were very poor compared to those of another system that had both an average processor and average buses. For example, in the past, Macintosh computers with relatively slow processor speeds (800 MHz) used to perform better than x86 based systems with processors running at nearly 2 GHz. HINT is known for being almost immune to artificial optimization and can be used by many computers ranging from a calculator to a supercomputer. It was developed at the U.S. Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory and is licensed under the terms of the GNU General Public License The GNU General Public License (GNU GPL or simply GPL) i ...
