Himalia Ridge
Himalia Ridge is a ridge running east–west on the north side of the Ganymede Heights massif, north-east of Jupiter Glacier, in the east of Alexander Island, Antarctica. It was photographed from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition in 1947 and mapped from these photographs by D. Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960. The ridge was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee following British Antarctic Survey geological work, 1983–84, after Himalia, a satellite of the planet Jupiter, in association with Jupiter Glacier.Stewart, J., 2011. Ganymede Heights
The Ganymede Heights consist of rounded ridges with extensive rock outcrops rising to about , between Jupiter Glacier and Ablation Valley on the eastern side of Alexander Island, Antarctica. They were mapped by the Directorate of Overseas Surveys from satellite imagery supplied by the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration in cooperation with the US Geological Survey. They were named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee from association with Jupiter Glacier after Ganymede, one of the satellites of the planet Jupiter. Antarctic Specially Protected Area
An Antarctic Specially Protected Area (ASPA) is an area on the continent of Antarctica, or on nearby islands, which is protected by scientists and several different international bodies. The protected areas were established in 1961 under the Antarctic Treaty System, which governs all the land and water south of 60 latitude and protects against human development. A permit is required for entry into any ASPA site. The ASPA sites are protected by the governments of Australia, New Zealand, United States, United Kingdom, Chile, France, Argentina, Poland, Russia, Norway, Japan, India, Italy, and Republic of Korea. There are currently 72 sites. Polarstar Ridge
Polarstar Ridge () is a jagged ridge, 4 nautical miles (7 km) long, trending southwest from The Obelisk in the Staccato Peaks, situated in the southern portion of Alexander Island, Antarctica. The ridge was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) after the Polar Star, the low-wing monoplane from which Lincoln Ellsworth, with pilot Herbert Hollick-Kenyon, discovered and photographed this ridge and the Staccato Peaks on November 23, 1935. Phobos Ridge
Phobos Ridge () is a rocky ridge of sandstones and shales forming the west side of Mars Glacier in the southeast corner of Alexander Island, Antarctica. The coast in this vicinity was first seen from the air by Lincoln Ellsworth on November 23, 1935, and roughly mapped from photos obtained on that flight by W.L.G. Joerg. Belemnite Point
Belemnite Point () is the eastern extremity of a mainly ice-free, hook-shaped ridge, midway between Lamina Peak and Ablation Point and inland from George VI Sound on the east coast of Alexander Island, Antarctica. It was first photographed from the air on November 23, 1935, by Lincoln Ellsworth and mapped from these photos by W.L.G. Joerg. Roughly surveyed in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition and resurveyed in 1949 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS), it was so named by FIDS because of belemnite fossils found in the outcropping marine strata.Stewart, J., 2011. Arenite Ridge
Arenite Ridge () is a steep-sided rock and snow ridge in northern Alexander Island, extending in a north–south direction lying immediately west of the Douglas Range and forming the eastern wall of Toynbee Glacier. The ridge includes Mount Tyrrell (which has two summits) and Mount Tilley. Ablation Point, also known as Punta Ablación, is the eastern extremity of a hook-shaped rock ridge marking the north side of the entrance to Ablation Valley, on the east coast of Alexander Island, Antarctica. Ablation Point – Ganymede Heights Antarctic Specially Protected Area
The Ablation Point – Ganymede Heights Antarctic Specially Protected Area is a 180 km2 mountainous tract of land on the eastern side of Alexander Island in the Bellinghausen Sea, west of Palmer Land on the Antarctic Peninsula. It has been designated Antarctic Specially Protected Area (ASPA) No.147 for its geological, geomorphological, glaciological, limnological, and ecological values, and to protect its terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems from uncontrolled human visitation and activity. Description The ASPA is some 18 km long from north to south, and 10 km wide east to west. It is flanked in the west by the upper Jupiter Glacier, in the east by the George VI Sound permanent ice shelf, in the north by Grotto Glacier and in the south by the lower Jupiter Glacier. Jupiter Glacier
Jupiter Glacier () is a glacier on the east coast of Alexander Island, Antarctica, long and wide at its mouth, which flows east into George VI Sound to the south of Ablation Valley. It was first photographed from the air on November 23, 1935, by Lincoln Ellsworth and mapped from these photos by W.L.G. Joerg. It was roughly surveyed in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition, and was named for the planet Jupiter by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey following their surveys in 1948 and 1949. The glacier lies north of Planet Heights, although Jupiter Glacier is not situated within the mountain range, the glacier (along with many other nearby glaciers named after planets of the Solar System) is so named under the association of Planet Heights even though it is not directly a glacier located within this mountainous range.
