Hilton London Metropole
The Hilton London Metropole is a 1,059-room 4-star hotel and conference centre located on Edgware Road in central London. It is bounded by the Marylebone Flyover to the north, Praed Street to the south, and the Paddington Basin development to the west. History The London Metropole Hotel opened in 1972. Designed by noted modernist architect Richard Seifert, it consisted of a 24-storey tower, one of the tallest buildings in the City of Westminster. A second wing, of 11 storeys, was added in 1989. The Metropole Hotels chain was sold by Lonrho to Stakis Hotels in 1996 and the property was renamed Stakis London Metropole. Ladbroke bought Stakis Hotels in 1999 and rebranded the 48 Stakis Hotels within their Hilton Hotels brand, with the property renamed Hilton London Metropole. The Paddington Special Policy Area covers a region almost the size of Soho, creating about of space between 1998 and 2018. The Hilton London Paddington, formerly the Great Western Royal Hotel, is a hotel that forms part of the Paddington Station complex in London, England. The hotel was originally the idea of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who was the hotel's first managing director. The funding came in large part from the Directors of the Great Western Railway Company, who were persuaded by Brunel to buy shares in the project. The hotel was built on Praed Street in the early 1850s and opened on 9 June 1854 by H.R.H. The Prince Albert, Prince Consort, having taken 14 months to build. British country landowners often lived in London for part of the year but they usually rented a house, if the family did not have their own townhouse. The numbers of business and foreign visitors were very small by modern standards, before the Industrial Revolution. The accommodation available to them included gentlemen's club accommodations, lodging houses and coaching inns. Lodging houses were more like private homes with rooms to let than commercial hotels and were often run by widows. Coaching inns served passengers from the stage coaches which were the main means of long-distance passenger transport before railways began to develop in the 1830s. Paddington Basin
Paddington Basin is the name given to a long canal basin, and its surrounding area, in Paddington, London. The basin commences 500 m south of the junction known as Little Venice, of the Regent's Canal and the Paddington Arm of the Grand Union Canal and runs for a similar length east–west. It was opened in 1801, with Paddington being chosen as the site of the basin because of its position on the New Road which led to the east, providing for onward transport. In its heyday, the basin was a major transshipment facility, and a hive of activity. Since 2000, the basin has been the centre of a major redevelopment as part of the wider Paddington Waterside scheme and is surrounded by modern buildings.
