Hilmar High School
Hilmar High School serves students from the rural community of Hilmar and Stevinson, California, United States. History Hilmar High School was founded in 1911, and was originally known as Hilmar Colony Union High School. There were 26 students the first year. Classes were originally held on the second floor of an elementary school. The high school moved into its own brick building in 1919, and then to its current campus in 1957. Future Farmers of America (FFA) has been active at the school since 1930. It is part of the Hilmar Unified School District, which is a K-12 rural school district with approximately 2277 students. The district operates five schools: Hilmar High School, Irwin and Colony High School, Hilmar Middle School, Elim Elementary School, and Merquin Elementary School. Hilmar is an unincorporated community in Merced County, California, United States. It is located west-southwest of Delhi, spanning and at an elevation of above sea level. For census purposes, Hilmar is aggregated with a nearby community into the Hilmar-Irwin census-designated place, which had 5,164 residents as of the 2020 census. Hilmar began as a colony of Swedish immigrants as early as 1906. The first post office opened in 1920. It is the home of the Hilmar Cheese Company which was founded in 1984 and began production in 1985. Hilmar has five schools within its district: Elim Elementary, Merquin Elementary, Hilmar Middle School, Hilmar High School, and Irwin Continuation School. The Sac-Joaquin Section (SJS) is the governing body of public and private high school athletics in parts of Northern San Joaquin Valley, California. Its geographic area also covers the California portion of the Lake Tahoe region; however, three schools in that area—North Tahoe, Truckee, and South Tahoe High Schools—are instead members of the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association due to their relative isolation from other California schools and their proximity to more populated areas in Nevada, especially in the Reno area. Stevinson, California
Stevinson is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Merced County, California. It is located west of Merced at an elevation of . The population was 275 at the 2020 census, down from 313 at the 2010 census. The Stevinson post office opened in 1907. The name honors James J. Stevinson, who bought land nearby in 1852. The town is noted for its bullring, where Portuguese bullfighting is staged regularly. It is one of several bullrings maintained by the Portuguese-American community throughout California's Central Valley. The US Army built the Howard Auxiliary Field (1942-1944) to train World War II pilots in Stevinson. The Turlock Journal is a newspaper in Turlock, California. It is owned by 209 Multimedia. The Journal was a daily newspaper until 2004, when it was reduced to twice-weekly publication. It has a paid circulation of approximately 4,000. The managing editor is Kristina Hacker. Hank Vander Veen is the publisher. The first edition of the Turlock Journal hit the streets in 1904 as a weekly, when Turlock had just a few hundred people.
