Hilma Contreras
Hilma Contreras Castillo (December 8, 1913 – January 15, 2006) was a Dominican Republic, Dominican writer, born in San Francisco de Macorís. She was educated in Paris, France, Paris, where she studied French and English, as well as literature and archaeology. She returned to the Dominican Republic in 1933. In 1937, at the encouragement of fellow writer Juan Bosch (politician), Juan Bosch, she began writing stories, which were published in various newspapers. In 2002, she became the first woman to receive the National Literature Award. Contreras never married or had children, and died in her home town in 2006. The Dominican Republic ( ; es, República Dominicana, ) is a country located on the island of Hispaniola in the Greater Antilles archipelago of the Caribbean region. It occupies the eastern five-eighths of the island, which it shares with Haiti, making Hispaniola one of only two Caribbean islands, along with Saint Martin, that is shared by two sovereign states. San Francisco De Macorís
San Francisco de Macorís is a city in the Dominican Republic located in the northeast portion of the island, in the Cibao region. It is the capital of the Duarte Province, and the sixth most populated city in the country. The name ''San Francisco de Macorís'' comes from a combination of the name of Francis of Assisi, Saint Francis, patron saint of the Franciscan Order (a religious organization from Italy that had come to this territory during colonization) and the territory's old name, which is ''Macorix people, Macorix''. The city is known as the ''Land of Cacao'' ("Tierra del Cacao"). Juan Bosch (politician)
Juan Emilio Bosch Gaviño (30 June 1909 – 1 November 2001) was a Dominican politician, historian, writer, essayist, educator, and the first democratically-elected president of the Dominican Republic for a brief time in 1963. Previously, he had been the leader of the Dominican opposition in exile to the dictatorial regime of Rafael Trujillo for over 25 years. To this day, he is remembered as an honest politician and regarded as one of the most prominent writers in Dominican literature. He founded both the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) in 1939 and the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) in 1973. Early life He was born to a Catalan father and a Puerto Rican mother of Galician descent. In 1934, he married Isabel García and had two children with her: Leon and Carolina.
