Hillbilly 100
The Hillbilly 100 is an annual dirt Super Late Model "Crown Jewel" race held every year on Labor Day weekend. The Hillbilly Hundred, promoted by famed event promoter Carl Short, is the oldest running super late model event and brings enormous history and tradition to the state of West Virginia. Started in 1967, the Hillbilly 100 was held at Pennsboro Speedway every year until 1998, when the race was moved to Tyler County Speedway in Middlebourne, West Virginia. Then in 2010 the race moved to West Virginia Motor Speedway, and once again in 2012 to I-77 Raceway Park up until 2016. Now the Hillbilly 100 is back at Tyler County Speedway where the 2009 event had a purse in excess of $125,000, with $1,000 to start the feature and $41,000 to win. As of 2017, the race has a purse of $25,000. In 2018, the 50th annual Hillbilly 100 promoter Carl Short paid $50,000 to win. Tyler County Speedway
Tyler County Speedway is a 1/4 mile dirt oval located in Tyler County, southeast of Middlebourne, West Virginia. Located at the Tyler County Fair Grounds, it hosts many large races such as the Hillbilly 100, Earl Hill Memorial, Topless 50, Eaton/Childers 'King of the Ring', Jackpot 100, and the Mega 100. Middlebourne, West Virginia
Middlebourne is a town in Tyler County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 715 at the 2020 census. It serves as the county seat of Tyler County. History Middlebourne was established by an enactment of the Virginia General Assembly in 1813. Two explanations have been given for the name of the town: One is that it was located halfway between Pennsylvania and a series of salt wells along the Kanawha River upstream of Charleston; the other is that it is located midway between the source and the mouth of Middle Island Creek, which flows through the town. Dirt track racing is a form of motorsport held on clay or dirt surfaced oval race tracks often used for thoroughbred horse racing. National Dirt Late Model Hall Of Fame
The National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame is a non-profit hall of fame for American drivers of dirt late model racecars. It is located on the grounds of Florence Speedway in Walton, Kentucky. History During 2001 while conversing with a group of people involved in the sport, longtime motorsports journalist Bill Holder decided to create the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame. The first induction ceremony took place later in August at Florence Speedway during their annual NORTH-SOUTH 100. Induction process Within the NDLMHOF, there are three types of inductees, each of which contributes to the sport in a different manner. The types are Drivers, Contributors, and the Sportsman Award. Rodney Combs
Rodney Combs (born March 27, 1950) is an American former stock car racing driver. He has not been in NASCAR since 1997, when he was released from his ride in the Busch Series. Combs entered NASCAR after many years on the open-wheel and short track circuit in the Midwest, racing with Mark Martin and Dick Trickle. Jimmy Owens is a professional dirt late model driver from Newport, Tennessee. Owens after starting out as a modified driver before switching to Late Models. Owens raced as an "Outlaw" by choosing to race selected larger purse events and not racing on national tours for several years. He eventually raced changed to national tours on the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series and won its championship in 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2020. Owens is nicknamed "The Newport Nightmare" and "The O Show." Racing career Owens won 4 UMP Modified National Championships before moving up to super late models where he has also had success. Rather than following a touring series, he opted for the "outlaw" mentality, traveling where he chooses and hitting all of the crown jewels.
