Hilary McPhee
Hilary Jane McPhee (born 1941) is an Australian writer and editor. She was awarded an Order of Australia for service to the Arts in 2003. Biography McPhee was born in 1941. She is a graduate of the University of Melbourne. She was a founding director, with Diana Gribble, of McPhee Gribble Publishers, 1975–89, and Chair of the Australia Council for the Arts and of the Major Organizations Board 1994-7, a founding director and sometime editor of online political newsletter NewMatilda.com. She has an honorary doctorate from Monash University, was the inaugural Vice-Chancellor's Fellow at the University of Melbourne and remains a senior Fellow of the University. From 2006-10 she was living and working between the Middle East and Italy, writing a book about the region and articles about matching philanthropic initiatives to the needs of young people. Di Gribble
Diana Mary Gribble (13 April 19424 October 2011) was an Australian publisher, book editor and businessperson. A feminist, Gribble was one of the most influential figures in the Australian publishing scene and wider cultural life between 1975 and 2010. Biography Gribble was born in Melbourne, the daughter of Sir Archibald Glenn and Betty Balderstone. Educated at Fintona Girls' School, she began studying architecture at the University of Melbourne, where she met Hilary McPhee. The Australia Council for the Arts, commonly known as the Australia Council, is the country's official arts council, serving as an arts funding and advisory body for the Government of Australia. Don Watson
Don Watson (born 1949) is an Australian author, screenwriter, former political adviser, and speechwriter. Early life Watson was born in 1949 at Warragul in the Gippsland region of Victoria, and grew up on a farm in nearby Korumburra. Academia and early career Watson studied for his undergraduate degree at La Trobe University and latterly completed PhD at Monash University before spending ten years working as an academic historian. He wrote three books on Australian history before turning his hand to TV and the stage. For several years he combined writing political satire for the actor Max Gillies with political speeches for the then Premier of Victoria, John Cain. Timothy Burstall AM (20 April 1927 – 19 April 2004) was an English Australian film director, writer and producer, best known for hit Australian movie ''Alvin Purple'' (1973) and its sequel ''Alvin Rides Again''. Burstall's films featured early appearances by many legendary Australian actors including Jack Thompson, Bruce Spence, Jacki Weaver, ''Alvin'' star Graeme Blundell, John Waters and Judy Davis. Speaking just after Burstall's death, David Williamson said that Burstall "couldn't stomach" Australia's lack of a film industry. "He was determined to do something about it and he had the energy and spirit to do it. Picador
A ''picador'' (; pl. ''picadores'') is one of the pair of horse-mounted bullfighters in a Spanish-style bullfight that jab the bull with a lance. They perform in the ''tercio de varas'', which is the first of the three stages in a stylized bullfight. Function The ''picador'' has three main functions in a traditional bullfight: * To pierce the muscle on the back of the bull’s neck in order to straighten the bull's charge. * To fatigue the bull’s neck muscles and general stamina as it tries to lift the horse with its head. * To lower the bull’s head in preparation for the next stage.
