Higinio Uriarte
José Higinio Uriarte y García del Barrio (11 January 1843 in Asunción – 21 April 1909) was a Paraguayan politician and President from April 12, 1877 to November 25, 1878. He was Juan Bautista Gill's cousin. He served as President of the Chamber of Deputies, and was elected as Vice President 1874. After Gill was assassinated, Uriarte became the acting President for the remainder of Gill's four-year-term. Juan Bautista Gill García (''Juan Bautista Gill Garcia del Barrio'') (October 28, 1840 – April 12, 1877) was President of Paraguay from November 25, 1874 to April 12, 1877 and the only Paraguayan President to be assassinated while in office. Personal life He was born in Asunción into a prominent family of Juan Andres Gill and Escolástica Garcia del Barrio y Bedoya. He was grandson of Don Juan Miguel Gill, one of the founding fathers of Paraguayan Independence and a member of the Cabildo, who had Celtic blood. He was married to Maria Concepcion Diaz de Bedoya. The vice president of Paraguay is the person with the second highest position in the executive branch of the Paraguayan government, after the president of Paraguay. The position of vice president was created with the Constitution of 1844, although it was the title given to ex officio members temporarily replacing the elected president in case of death or absence, and was not a position elected alongside the president. The Constitution of 1870 established the position with a permanent character, requiring election alongside the president and assigning to it the presidency of the National Congress and the one of the Senate. The position disappeared between 1940 and 1993, as the Constitutions of 1940 and 1967 abolished it. Cándido Bareiro
Cándido Pastor Bareiro Caballero (October 27, 1833 in Luque Paraguay – September 4, 1880 in Asuncion, Paraguay) was President of Paraguay from 27 November 1878 to 4 September 1880 and the leading politician of the post-war decade. Bareiro served as ambassador and commercial agent for the Paraguayan government of Francisco Solano López government in Europe. During the last months of Paraguayan War he returned to Paraguay in 1869 and entered politics, where he started a political movement that would result in creation of the Colorado Party. A strong ally of General Bernardino Caballero, he was elected President in 1878 with Caballero's help and died from a stroke after two years in office.
