Highway 171 (Wisconsin)
State Trunk Highway 171 (often called Highway 171, STH-171 or WIS 171) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. It runs east–west in southwest Wisconsin from near Ferryville to Boaz. A section of the route was initially designated as WIS 131 in 1924, but it was not signed as WIS 171 until sometime between 1948 and 1956, when the highway was extended east to US 14 near Boaz. Route description The highway begins at an intersection with WIS 35 east of Lake Winneshiek, a lake along the Mississippi River. From there, it runs eastward, following Copper Creek until it ends just west of Mount Sterling, where it intersects WIS 27. The highway then runs eastward before curving to the north to run along an unnamed creek, which the highway follows to the southeast until it drains into the Kickapoo River, at which point the highway crosses it to run along Main Street in Gays Mills. Gays Mills, Wisconsin
Gays Mills is a village in Crawford County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 491 at the 2010 census. History In 1847 James B. Gay, a native of Indiana, built a dam and a sawmill on the Kickapoo River, which proved to be a flourishing success. When his health started to fail, James convinced his brothers John and Thomas to move to the area. In 1865 John Gay built the first flour mill south of the saw mill. In 1872 Thomas Gay and family organized the First Congregational Church, the first church in Gays Mills and in 1898 the church building itself was finished. In the years between 1848 and 1865, many families moved into the community, which came to be known as Gays Mills in honor of the founder and his brothers. Kickapoo River
The Kickapoo River is a tributary of the Wisconsin River in the state of Wisconsin, United States. It is named for the Kickapoo Indians who occupied Wisconsin before the influx of white settlers in the early 19th century. Watershed The river begins midway between Wilton, Wisconsin and Mill Bluff State Park and flows south through a deep valley cut into the hilly Driftless Zone of southwest Wisconsin. It empties into the Wisconsin River just south of Wauzeka, Wisconsin. Kickapoo is an Algonquian word meaning "one who goes here, then there", a fitting name as the river is very crooked, frequently doubling back on itself as it flows through the Wisconsin landscape. Wisconsin Highway 27
State Trunk Highway 27 (often called Highway 27, STH-27 or WIS 27) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The highway spans a length of and is generally two-lane local road with the exception of urban multilane arterials within some cities. Earlier routing of the highway had it reaching Superior along the present US 53 and Fennimore along the present US 61 and following I-94 between Black River Falls and Osseo. Route description In southern Crawford County, WIS 27 begins at a junction with US 18, WIS 60 and WIS 35 in Prairie du Chien. The highway turns north after a three-mile (5 km) northeast stretch out of the city and passes through Eastman and Mount Sterling.
