''Highs in the Mid-Sixties'' were a series of compilation albums released in the mid 1980s on AIP Records developed by Greg Shaw. The series was spun off of the similar '' Pebbles'' series. Each volume focuses on a specific geographical region. AIP Records
AIP Records is a record label that was started by Greg Shaw's Bomp! Records in 1983 to continue the Pebbles series. AIP stands for "Archive International Productions". The first 10 volumes in the Pebbles series had been released by BFD Records of Kookaburra, Australia (most likely a fictitious label name to avoid copyright infringement lawsuits) in 1979–1980 and have been kept in print by AIP for many years. Including those in the companion Highs in the Mid-Sixties series – which concentrated on American regional music scenes – there are over 50 LPs covering some 800 obscure, mostly American "Original Punk Rock" songs recorded in the mid-1960s – primarily known today as the garage rock and psychedelic rock genres – that were previously known only to a handful of collectors. Pebbles, Volume 8 (CD)
''Pebbles, Volume 8'' is a compilation album among the CDs in the Pebbles series; it is subtitled Southern California 1. The next CD in the series, '' Pebbles, Volume 9'' also feature bands from Southern California; while '' Highs in the Mid-Sixties, Volume 1'', ''Highs in the Mid-Sixties, Volume 2'', and '' Highs in the Mid-Sixties, Volume 3'' showcase music from Los Angeles specifically. Release data This album was released on AIP Records in 1996 as #AIP-CD-5025. Despite the similar catalogue number, there is no relation between the tracks on this CD and the tracks on the corresponding LP. Notes on the tracks The Dovers are highly regarded in the garage rock community; this is the A-side of their fourth single. Other Dovers songs were included on the first two LPs in the Pebbles series. "I Never Loved Her" by the Starfires is one of the most valuable garage rock singles. ''Pebbles, Volume 2'' is a compilation album featuring American underground psychedelic and garage rock musical artists from the 1960s. It is the second installment of the ''Pebbles'' series and was released on BFD Records in 1979 (''see'' 1979 in music). Musical highlights includes the opening number, "Makin' Deals", by the Satans, which features the lyric, "Can you guess my name?", two years prior to the Rolling Stones on their song, "Sympathy for the Devil", and in a similar fashion to Mick Jagger's snarling vocals. Among the tracks on the album, the Choir's " It's Cold Outside", the Zakary Thaks' " Bad Girl", and the Lyrics' "So What!" are arguably the most known for their additional inclusions in the '' Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era, 1965–1968'' box set, in 1998. The Electric Prunes
The Electric Prunes are an American psychedelic rock band, formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1965. Much of the band's music was, as music historian Richie Unterberger described it, possessed of "an eerie and sometimes anguished ambiance." Their most successful material was by songwriters Annette Tucker and Nancie Mantz, though the group also penned their own songs. Incorporating psychedelia and elements of embryonic electronic rock, the band's sound was marked by innovative recording techniques with fuzz-toned guitars and oscillating sound effects. In addition, guitarist Ken Williams' and singer James Lowe's concept of "free-form garage music" provided the band with a richer sonic palette and exploratory lyrical structure than many of their contemporaries. The Romani (also spelled Romany or Rromani , ), colloquially known as the Roma, are an Indo-Aryan ethnic group, traditionally nomadic itinerants.
