Higher Education Research Data Collection
The Higher Education Research Data Collection (HERDC) is the annual collection of research income data from Australian universities. It is currently collected by the Department of Education, Skills and Employment. HERDC data is used in the calculation oresearch block grants It was originally called the Higher Education Financial and Research Publications Data Collection. Higher Education Funding Act 1988 section 18 outlined the data that must be reported by institutions. The Australian Department of Education, Skills and Employment (DESE) was a Government department, department of the Government of Australia, existing between 1 February 2020 to 1 July 2022 from a merger of the Department of Education (Australia), Department of Education (2019–2020) and Department of Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business. It was formed in 2007 and absorbed the former departments of Education, Science and Training, and Employment and Workplace Relations. Australian Competitive Grants
The Australian Competitive Grants Register (ACGR) was a centralised register that listed funding schemes that were approved by the Australian Government as being "competitive research grants" to Australian higher education providers. Cooperative Research Centre
Cooperative Research Centres (CRCs) are an Australian Federal Government program and are key bodies for Australian science, scientific research. The Cooperative Research Centres Programme was established in 1990 to enhance Australia's industrial, commercial and economic growth through the opined development of sustained, user-driven, cooperative public-private research centres that achieve high levels of outcomes in adoption and commercialisation. The program emphasises the importance of collaborative arrangements to maximise the benefits of research through an enhanced process of utilisation, commercialisation, and technology transfer. It also has an education component with a focus on producing graduates with skills relevant to industry needs. Most CRCs offer scholarships for postgraduate students. Excellence In Research For Australia
Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) is Australia’s national research evaluation framework, developed and administered by the Australian Research Council (ARC). The first full round of ERA occurred in 2010, and subsequent rounds followed in 2012, 2015 and 2018. A round was scheduled for 2023, but in September 2022 the ARC announced that this would be postponed as they were transitioning the ERA process to a more robust and data driven model. In addition to the Higher Education Research Data Collection, which collects statistics about research in Australia, the ERA collects itemised data, with all research classified according to the Field of Research (FOR) classification scheme used by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. There are 43 universities in Australia: 40 Australian universities (36 public and 4 private) and 3 international private universities. The Commonwealth Higher Education Support Act 2003 sets out three groups of Australian higher education providers: universities, other self-accrediting higher education institutions, and state and territory accredited higher education institutions. For admissions to universities, those students who have completed Australian state curricula are granted a state-specific Australian Tertiary Admission Rank.
