High Tor (play)
''High Tor'' is a 1936 play by Maxwell Anderson. It received the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Play of the 1936–37 season. Twenty years after the original production, Anderson adapted it into a television musical with Arthur Schwartz. Play The play is named for a summit overlooking the Tappan Zee portion of New York's Hudson River, near where Anderson lived in Rockland County. The story was inspired by the real life controversy over quarrying the palisades along the lower Hudson. The play also shares the plot element of a ghostly crew of Dutch sailors on the Hudson with Washington Irving's short story ''Rip Van Winkle''. Anderson began writing the play in May 1936. It was first presented onstage in Cleveland, Ohio, in December 1936, with Burgess Meredith (Anderson's neighbor in Rockland County) and Peggy Ashcroft in the lead roles. ''High Tor'' is a soundtrack album featuring Bing Crosby, Julie Andrews and Everett Sloane. It was primarily taken from the soundtrack of the ''Ford Star Jubilee'' TV film aired on March 10, 1956 by CBS. A musical adaptation of Maxwell Anderson’s play of the same name, the soundtrack album was released in 1956 by Decca Records, (catalogue number, DL 8272) and the album was later issued on CD by Stage Door Records in 2017 (catalogue No. STAGE 2420). Julie Andrews' songs from the film were included on the Sepia Records CD "Once Upon a Time" (Sepia 1103) released in 2007. Content and reception Bing Crosby linked dialogue and songs from the soundtrack and recorded "When You’re in Love" and "John Barleycorn" separately for inclusion in the album. High Tor State Park is a state park on the north edge of the Town of Clarkstown in Rockland County, New York, United States. The park is located on South Mountain, which has two peaks, High Tor and Little Tor. Its highest peak, High Tor, is high. Park description High Tor State Park is intended for day use during the summer months, and contains picnic tables, a pool and showers, hiking trails, and a food concession. The Long Path passes through the park. The park contains two peaks: High Tor at , and Little Tor at . They are the highest peaks in not only the park, but in all of the Hudson Palisades. The skyline of New York City can be seen from the summit of High Tor. High Tor was used as a signal point during the American Revolution for the colonists, and was used as an air raid watch during World War II.
