High Sheriff Of Merionethshire
This is a list of Sheriffs of Merionethshire (or Sheriffs of Meirionnydd). The historic county of Merioneth was originally created in 1284. The administrative county of Merioneth was created from the historic county under the Local Government Act 1888. A Sheriff is the legal representative of the monarch, and is appointed annually for each county in Wales and England. Their duty is to keep the peace in the county, and to ensure the country follows the law of the monarch. Originally, the job was a position of status and strength, but today it is principally a ceremonial role. Edmund Meyricke (MP)
Edmund Meyricke (died 1666) was a Welsh politician who sat in the House of Commons of England in 1660. Meyricke was the eldest son of Peter Meyricke of Ucheldre, Gwyddelwern, Merioneth and his wife Lowri Anwyl, daughter of Lewis Anwyl of Parc, Llanfrothen. He succeeded to the estates on the death of his father in 1630 and became a J.P. in the same year. He was Sheriff of Merioneth from 1632 to 1633. He tried to avoid any part in the Civil War and though called to execute a Commission of Array in 1642, he failed to act. He was commissioner for assessment from 1647 to 1649, in 1652, in 1657, and from January 1660 until his death. In 1660, he was elected Member of Parliament for Merioneth in the Convention Parliament. He was Deputy Lieutenant from August 1660 and was restored to the commission of peace in September 1660. Meyricke died in 1666 and was buried at Gwyddelwern on 9 November 1666. Sir John Wynn, 1st Baronet
Sir John Wynn, 1st Baronet (1553 – 1 March 1627), was a Welsh baronet, Member of Parliament and antiquary. Life He was the son of Morys Wynn ap John, whom he succeeded in 1580, inheriting Gwydir Castle in Carnarvonshire. John was educated at All Souls College, Oxford (1570, awarded BA 1578) and studied law at Furnival's Inn (1572) and the Inner Temple (1576). He claimed to be directly descended from the princes of Gwynedd through Rhodri ab Owain son of Owain Gwynedd. The male line from his family died out in 1779 (see 'Legacy' section below) and the senior male line passed to the Anwyl of Tywyn family. His mother was Jane (Siân) Bulkeley, daughter of Sir Richard Bulkeley and his wife Catherine Griffith, and sister of Sir Richard Bulkeley, head of the Anglesey branch of a powerful landowning family, who originally came from Cheshire. Matthew Herbert (c. 1563 – 1611), of Dolguog, Machynlleth, Montgomeryshire, was a Welsh politician. He was a Member (MP) of the Parliament of England for Montgomery Boroughs in 1586. Robert Lloyd (of Rhiwgoch)
Robert Lloyd was a Welsh politician who sat in the House of Commons in 1586 and 1601. Lloyd was the son of Evan Lloyd of Rhiwgoch and his wife Elen Salusbury, daughter of Robert Salusbury of Llanrwst, Denbighshire. He was possibly educated at Shrewsbury School in 1574. In 1586, he was elected Member of Parliament for Merioneth. He was at this time escheator for Merioneth. He was High Sheriff of Merionethshire in 1596 and Deputy Lieutenant in 1600. In 1601 he was elected MP for Merioneth again. During this time he was unpopular with people of influence, in particular the Earl of Pembroke, and was subject to various allegations about his conduct. He was High Sheriff of Merionethshire in 1602. In 1610 he rebuilt his house at Rhiwgoch. He was High Sheriff of Merioneth again in 1615 and in 1625. William Maurice (politician)
Sir William Maurice (April 1552 – August 1622) was a Welsh politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1593 and 1611. Maurice was the son of Morys ap Ellis ap Morys, and grandson of Ellis ap Morris of Clennenau, his brother was captain Ellis Maurice fought for Queen Elizabeth I in Ireland. He was one of the Council of the Marches of Wales. He was High Sheriff of Caernarvonshire in 1582 and High Sheriff of Merionethshire in 1591. In 1593, he was elected Member of Parliament for Carnarvonshire. He was High Sheriff of Carnarvonshire again in 1596. In 1597 he was re-elected MP for Carnarvonshire. In 1601 he was elected MP for Beaumaris. He was a personal friend of James I, and induced him to assume the title of King of Great Britain. He was knighted at Whitehall on 23 July 1603. Gwydir Castle
Gwydir Castle is situated in the Conwy valley, Wales, a mile to the west of the ancient market town of Llanrwst and to the south of the large village of Trefriw. An example of a fortified manor house dating back to c1500, it is located on the edge of the floodplain of the river Conwy, and overlooked from the west by the now-forested slopes of Gwydir Forest. Etymology The name 'Gwydir' likely derives from a contraction of ''Gwy-dir'', "water land," the site long being subject to flooding from the nearby river Conwy. Llanfachreth
Llanfachreth is a settlement approximately three miles north-east of Dolgellau, Gwynedd, in the community of Brithdir and Llanfachreth within the historic boundaries of Merionethshire ( cy, Meirionnydd, Sir Feirionnydd), Wales. History Llanfachreth a small village near Harlech in north west Wales is positioned near the sea in Cardigan bay. The village was greatly adapted by influence of patrons of the Nannau family locally of Dolgellau. Gogerddan
__NOTOC__ Gogerddan, or in English, Gogarthen, was an estate near to Trefeurig and the most important in what was then the county of Cardiganshire, Wales. Owned since at least the fifteenth century by the Pryse family, the main house, called Plas Gogerddan, still stands and is a Grade II listed building. The estate became especially wealthy from the seventeenth century on the profits from lead mining, which is when the house was constructed. The house was significantly altered in the 1860s and was sold by Sir Pryse Loveden Saunders-Pryse to University College of Wales in 1949. Gogerddan provisionally held the high temperature record for Wales – 35.3°C, which was recorded on 18 July 2022. It replaced the previous record holder Hawarden which held the record for almost 32 years.
