High Park (provincial Electoral District)
High Park was a provincial electoral district in the west-end of the old City of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It was represented in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1926 to 1975. It was mostly redistributed into the High Park—Swansea electoral district for the 1975 Ontario general election. The High Park provincial electoral district was notable for its electors defeating the incumbent Premier, and their Member of Provincial Parliament, George Drew, in the 1948 provincial election. He lost his seat over the issue of temperance; even though his Conservatives were returned with a majority government. The old City of West Toronto Junction had been an alcohol-free area since even before it was annexed by Toronto back in 1909, and those "dry-laws" were still current at the time of the 1948 election. Parkdale—High Park is a provincial electoral district in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, created in 1996 and represented in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario since 1999. It is located in the Toronto's west-end, bordering on the lakefront to the south, the Humber River to the west, and the Canadian Pacific Railway tracks essentially defining its northern and eastern borders. There are 107,035 residents in the district.The figure is a sum of the population of the two city wards that occupy Parkdale-High Park. The total may be underrepresented by as much as 5% due to "census undercoverage". The 1937 Ontario general election was held on October 6, 1937, to elect the 90 Members of the 20th Legislative Assembly of Ontario ("MLAs"). It was the 20th general election held in the Province of Ontario. The Ontario Liberal Party, led by Mitchell Hepburn, was re-elected for a second term in government, with a slightly reduced majority in the Legislature. The Ontario Conservative Party, led by William Earl Rowe, was able to win six additional seats, and continued to form the official opposition. The 1934 Ontario general election was the 19th general election held in the Province of Ontario, Canada. It was held on June 19, 1934, to elect the 19th Legislative Assembly of Ontario ("MLAs"). The Ontario Liberal Party, led by Mitchell Hepburn, defeated the governing Ontario Conservative Party, led by George Stewart Henry. Hepburn was assisted by Harry Nixon's Progressive bloc of MLAs who ran in this election as Liberal-Progressives on the understanding that they would support a Hepburn led government. Nixon, himself, became a senior cabinet minister in the Hepburn government. Minerva Reid
Minerva Ellen Reid (20 Oct 1871 – 28 April 1957) was a teacher, medical doctor, and politician in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. In 1915, Reid became the chief of surgery at Toronto's Women's College Hospital, making her the first woman to hold such a position in North America. Background Reid was born on lot 11, 2nd Concession, West, Mono, Ontario, as the 10th of 12 children to John Reid and Margaret Henderson. She went to school at Camilla Public School and Orangeville District Secondary School. An extremely bright student, she passed her entrance exams at age 11 in 1883. The 1926 Ontario general election was the 17th general election held in the Province of Ontario, Canada. Parkdale was a provincial riding electing Members of Provincial Parliament (MPP) to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario.
