The Port Jefferson Branch is a rail line and service owned and operated by the Long Island Rail Road in the U.S. state of New York. The branch splits from the Main Line just east of Hicksville and runs northeast and east to Port Jefferson. Several stations on the Main Line west of Hicksville are served primarily by trains bound to/from the Port Jefferson branch, so LIRR maps and schedules for the public include that part of the Main Line in the "Port Jefferson Branch" service. The Port Jefferson Branch is one of the busiest branches of the LIRR, with frequent electric service to Huntington where electrification ends, and diesel service east of Huntington continuing to Port Jefferson. The EMD DE30AC and DM30AC are a class of 46 locomotives built between 1997–1999 by Electro-Motive Division in the Super Steel Plant in Schenectady, New York, for the Long Island Rail Road of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) in New York. Originally divided equally between the two types, the fleet currently consists of 24 DE30AC locomotives (diesel power only) and 20 DM30AC locomotives (diesel or third rail power). Details The DE30AC and DM30AC locomotives replaced aging GP38 locomotives, with GP38s used to push and pull diesel trains and other locomotives converted into power packs (cab control) used to provide Head End Power for the trains. The Main Line is a rail line owned and operated by the Long Island Rail Road in the U.S. state of New York. It begins as a two-track line at the Long Island City station in Long Island City, Queens, and runs along the middle of Long Island about 95 miles (153 km) to the Greenport station in Greenport, Suffolk County. Montauk (LIRR Station)
Montauk is the terminus of the Montauk Branch of the Long Island Rail Road, as well as the easternmost railroad station on Long Island and in New York state. The station is located on Edgemere Street ( Suffolk County Route 49) and Fort Pond Road west of Montauk Harbor, New York. History Originally built in 1895 by the Brooklyn and Montauk Railroad, it was demolished in 1907, then rebuilt twenty years later, only to be relocated by the US Navy during World War II along with a great deal of Montauk itself. The Navy confiscated the property along Fort Pond Bay in order to transform it into a sea plane base, and moved the LIRR property to the south with a third station built in 1942. The Ronkonkoma Branch is a rail service operated by the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) in the U.S. state of New York. On LIRR maps and printed schedules, the "Ronkonkoma Branch" includes trains running along the railroad's Main Line from Hicksville (where the Port Jefferson Branch leaves the Main Line) to Ronkonkoma, and between Ronkonkoma and the Main Line's eastern terminus at Greenport. The section of the Main Line east of Ronkonkoma is not electrified and is referred to as the Greenport Branch. Smithtown is a station on the Port Jefferson Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. It is located off a low bridge over NY 25 – 25A along Redwood Lane between NY 25-25A and Landing Avenue in Smithtown, New York. History Smithtown station was originally built in 1872 by Charles Hallett of Riverhead for the Smithtown and Port Jefferson Railroad. In 1937, the station was rebuilt, and the grade crossing at Main Street (NY 25/NY 25A) immediately west of the station was eliminated. A freight spur exists west of the bridge under Brooksite Drive. Kings Park is a station on the Port Jefferson Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. It is located at the southwest corner of Suffolk CR 14 (Indian Head Road) and NY 25A (Main Street) in Kings Park, New York. History Originally known as St. Johnsland station when it was built by Charles Hallett of Riverhead for the Smithtown and Port Jefferson Railroad between November and December 1872, it was renamed Kings Park station in June 1891. The Kings Park area was the site of a major derailment on February 16, 1947, but there were no casualties. The station was rebuilt in 1948 with an attached freight storage area, and rebuilt again during the 1990s. Greenlawn is a station on the Port Jefferson Branch of the Long Island Rail Road near the intersection of Boulevard Avenue and Broadway (Suffolk CR 86) in Greenlawn, New York, a few blocks north of Pulaski Road. It is the first station east of Huntington on the non-electrified section of the branch. History Greenlawn was originally known as Old Fields, but the first railroad station was named Centreport as it was meant to serve the village of Centerport, located about to the north. The Hempstead Branch is an electrified rail line and service owned and operated by the Long Island Rail Road in the U.S. state of New York. The branch begins at the Main Line at Queens Interlocking, just east of Queens Village station. It parallels the Main Line past Bellerose to Floral Park, where it splits southward and continues east via the village of Garden City to Hempstead Crossing. Floral Park is a Long Island Rail Road train station in Floral Park, New York, at Tulip and Atlantic Avenues, on the Main Line and Hempstead Branch just west of their split.
