Heywood Railway Station, Victoria
Heywood railway station is a disused station on the Portland railway line in the town of Heywood, in the state of Victoria, Australia. The last passenger train between Ararat and Portland was on 12 September 1981, operated by a DRC railcar. The platform and station building are still in place at Heywood, although in a disused condition. Some of the former yard remains as unconnected broad gauge track, with power connections also provided to a work camp area. The former goods shed was removed by October 1983, and the through line was converted to standard gauge in 1995. Portland Railway Line
The Portland railway line is a railway line in south-western Victoria, Australia. It runs from the main Western standard gauge line at Maroona through Hamilton to the port town of Portland. History The line was built as (broad gauge) from Ararat to Maroona, Hamilton, Heywood and Portland, and opened in 1877. It was converted to standard gauge in 1995. Freight operator Pacific National indefinitely suspended all rail services to Portland in 2004, affecting local companies including Portland Aluminium, transport company Kalari, and freight broker Anchor Logistics. Portland container traffic had been conveyed between Maroona and Portland on grain services twice a week, but Pacific National said that the drought meant there were no trains to attach the loading to. Hamilton Railway Station, Victoria
Hamilton is a railway station located on the Ararat - Portland railway in the town of Hamilton, Victoria, Australia. Today the station is now used only for through trains, and the large station building is used only to serve bus passengers, although the disused platform remains in reasonable condition. History The railway to Hamilton opened in October 1877, in December that year the line was extended south to the final terminus of Portland. Portland Railway Station, Victoria
Portland: there were two former railway stations in the town of Portland, Victoria Australia. History The original station was north of the town centre, and this remained the principal station even after the extension to Pier station, on the waterfront, was opened on 26 May 1883. From 1 March 1897, the original station was renamed Portland North while the 1883 station became plain Portland until it closed on 6 May 1968. Then the North site (which had been rebuilt with a modern passenger building) again became the sole station and goods yard. The change was due to alterations to the local rail facilities as part of the modernisation of the Port of Portland. Heywood is a town on the Fitzroy River in the Australian state of Victoria. It is situated at an elevation of 27 metres amidst rolling green hills in an agricultural, pastoral and timbercutting district. Heywood is west of Melbourne at the intersection of the Princes and Henty Highways and north of Portland. It is on the railway line to Portland, at the junction of the presently-unused branch to Mount Gambier, South Australia. DRC Railcar
The DRC (Diesel Rail Car) was a class of railmotor operated by the Victorian Railways on its country rail network in Victoria, Australia. The cars were built by Tulloch Limited in New South Wales, and featured aluminium and steel construction, air-conditioning, and twin diesel engines with hydraulic transmissions. History The first railcars of this type were built in 1970 for the New South Wales Government Railways as 1200 class railcars. The Victorian Railways decided to order two railcars of the same design, to replace the 280hp Walker railmotors then in use. The first DRC entered service in May 1971, classified DRC40, followed by DRC41 on November 1971.
