Herod (originally King Herod; April 1758 – 12 May 1780) was a Thoroughbred racehorse. He was one of the three foundation sires of the modern Thoroughbred racehorse, along with Matchem and Eclipse. Highflyer (1774 – 18 October 1793) was an undefeated Thoroughbred racehorse and a very successful sire of the 18th century.Ahnert, Rainer L. Highflyer's sire was the important Herod, one of the foundation stallions for the classic Thoroughbred, and himself an excellent racehorse and stud, producing Florizel (b.c. 1768) and Woodpecker (ch.c. 1773). Sultan (horse)
Sultan (1816-) was a British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and a leading sire in Great Britain and Ireland for six successive seasons. Breeding He was by Selim (sire of six classics winners), out of Bacchante by Williamson's Ditto. Sultan was inbred to three great sires, Herod (4m x 4f), Eclipse (4m x 4f), to Herod's best son, Highflyer (4 x 4). Sultan was a bay with a blaze, a sock on off (right) fore and near (left) hind, stocking near fore and off hind leg. He had a refined, beautiful head, well-sprung ribs, deep girth, and muscular, powerful hindquarters. Although he was a long horse he was a good weight carrier and sound, racing until the age of eight. Racing career Sultan had a good race record, winning 14 times. Selim (horse)
Selim (1802–1825) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse. He was owned by the Prince of Wales, D. Radcliffe and later Arthur Shakespear. After retiring from racing he became a successful stallion and was British Champion sire in 1814. His progeny included Azor, Medora, Sultan and Turquoise. Background Selim was a chestnut colt bred by General Sparrow and foaled in 1802. He was sired by Buzzard, who won the Craven Stakes twice and the Jockey Club Plate. Selim's dam was the bay Alexander mare, a daughter of Alexander. She also produced Castrel, Rubens and Bronze (all of whom for full-siblings to Selim. Potoooooooo or variations of Pot-8-Os (1773 – November 1800) was an 18th-century thoroughbred racehorse who won over 30 races and defeated some of the greatest racehorses of his time. He went on to be an important sire, whose leading runners included Epsom Derby winners Waxy, Champion and Tyrant. He is best known for the unusual spelling of his name, pronounced 'Potatoes'. Prunella (1788 – December 1811) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse. Raced from 1791 to 1794, she won three races including a Sweepstakes of 200 guineas each at Newmarket. She was retired to stud and became an influential broodmare, foaling Epsom Derby winner Pope and Epsom Oaks winner Pelisse. Her daughters also went on to become top broodmares in their own right. She was owned by Augustus FitzRoy, 3rd Duke of Grafton. Background Prunella was a bay filly bred by the 3rd Duke of Grafton and foaled in 1788. She was sired by the undefeated Great Subscription Purse winner Highflyer. Highflyer was also a top stallion, becoming Champion sire thirteen times. Diomed, foaled in 1777, was an English Thoroughbred race horse who won 1780 Epsom Derby, the inaugural running of Epsom Derby, the Derby in 1780. Florizel (1768–1791) was a Kingdom of Great Britain, British Thoroughbred racehorse. He was a Bay (horse), bay son of Herod (horse), Herod foaled in 1768. As a sire he produced 175 winners who won a total of 75,901 pounds. Offspring included Eager (horse), Eager (winner of the 1791 Epsom Derby, Derby), Tartar (horse, foaled 1789), Tartar (St. Leger), Ninety-three (horse), Ninety-three (St. Leger), Brilliant, Diomed (winner of the Derby and a great sire in the US, producing Sir Archy), Ulysses (horse), Ulysses, Moustrap, and Admiral.
