Hermenegildo Portocarrero, Baron Of Forte De Coimbra
Hermenegildo de Albuquerque Portocarrero, Baron of Forte de Coimbra was a Brazilian Marshal and Baron. He was known for being the primary commander of the Invasion of Corumbá during the Mato Grosso Campaign of the Paraguayan War. Biography Born in Recife, Pernambuco, Hermenegildo was the son of Luís da Costa Ferreira and Ana Teodora Pita Portocarrero de Melo e Albuquerque. He began his military career, at the age of eighteen, on January 28, 1836. He was commander of at the beginning of the Paraguayan War. However the fort was surrounded by a force of 5,000 Paraguayan infantry, transported in ten ships by Colonel Vicente Barrios at Asunción. Portocarrero was given an ultimatum to surrender but he refused, stating that he would fight to the last cartridge, despite the inferiority of men and weapons. Mato Grosso ( – lit. "Thick Bush") is one of the states of Brazil, the third largest by area, located in the Central-West region. The state has 1.66% of the Brazilian population and is responsible for 1.9% of the Brazilian GDP. Maria Antonieta Portocarrero Thedim ( née de Farias; 23 August 1922 – 3 March 2018), known professionally as Tônia Carrero, was a Brazilian actress. The Cuiabá River ( Portuguese: ''Rio Cuiabá'') is a Brazilian river in the western state of Mato Grosso that flows in the Río de la Plata Basin. It is a tributary of the São Lourenço River. Course In its upper reaches the Cuiabá River flows through the Águas do Cuiabá Ecological Station, which was created as a state park in June 2002 as part of an effort to clean up the water of the river, which was polluted with garbage and raw sewage.
