''Herkules Maier'' is a 1928 German silent film, silent comedy film directed by Alexander Esway and starring Reinhold Schünzel, Claire Rommer and Ida Perry.Bock & Bergfelder p.434 It was shot at the Babelsberg Studios in Potsdam. The film's sets were designed by the art directors Arthur Schwarz and Julius von Borsody. It premiered at the Ufa-Palast am Zoo in Berlin. Synopsis A Peddler, travelling salesman and his wife are expecting a baby. He tries various schemes to raise money to support them both. Alexander Esway
Alexander Esway (20 January 1895 – 23 August 1947) was a Hungarian-born film director, screenwriter, and producer. Life and career Esway was born Sándor Ezry in Budapest. In the late 1920s and early 1930s he worked as a director and screenwriter, first in Germany and then in the UK. He began working primarily in France from 1933, although he also continued to work in the UK where he set up a short-lived production company, Atlantic Film Productions, in 1935. The company's only production was ''Thunder in the City'', starring Edward G. Robinson. During World War II, he worked in Hollywood on Allied propaganda films, most notably, ''The Cross of Lorraine''. After the war, he returned to France where he made his last two films: the two-part war film ''Le Bataillon du ciel'', based on the book of the same name by Joseph Kessel, and '' L'Idole'', starring Yves Montand. Rosa Valetti (25 January 1876, Berlin, Germany – 10 December 1937, Vienna, Austria), born Rosa Alice Vallentin, was a German actress, cabaret performer, and singer. Biography Rosa Valetti was born in Berlin, the daughter of industrialist Felix Vallentin and sister of actor Hermann Vallentin. She played her first roles in the theatres of suburban Berlin. Inspired by the November Revolution and her meeting with political satirist Kurt Tucholsky, Valetti began performing in cabarets. In 1920, she founded the ''Café Grössenwahn'' ("Café Megalomania"), which has been recognized as one of the most important literary and political cabarets in 1920s Berlin. Café Megalomania was frequented by Expressionist writers, and the program of sketch comedy and political songs reflected Valetti's belief in the cabaret as an instrument of political and social criticism. Max Ehrlich
Max Michaelis Ehrlich (7 December 1892 – 1 October 1944) was a German actor, screenwriter, and director on the German theater, comedy and cabaret scene of the 1930s. Ehrlich began his career in the 1920s at various theatres, including leading roles in Max Reinhardt productions and revues. He appeared in 42 films, ten of which he directed, and on eight records. He wrote several books, including ''From Adelbert to Zilzer'', his best-selling humorous collection of stories and anecdotes about sixty-two of his best known show business friends and colleagues. Career in Nazi Germany In 1933, the National Socialists seized power and stopped Ehrlich and his other Jewish colleagues from working in Germany. As a result, he left for Vienna to appear with the Rudolf Nelson Revue. However, there too, Austrian anti-Semites interrupted the show with cries of "Jews, get out of Vienna." Eugen Burg (6 January 1871 – 17 April 1944) was a German actor. His daughter was Hansi Burg. Burg was a close friend of the actor Hans Albers. Burg was born Eugen Hirschburg into a Jewish family, but later converted to Protestantism. He was banished from the film industry when the Nazi Party came to power in Germany. He later died in Theresienstadt concentration camp.
