''Herizons'' is a Canadian feminist magazine published in Winnipeg, Manitoba and distributed to subscribers throughout Canada. Billed as "Canada's answer to ''Ms. magazine''," it is also sold on newsstands. History Founded in 1979 as a volunteer feminist newspaper, ''The Manitoba Women's Newspaper'', ''Herizons'' switched to a magazine format in 1983, under the directorship of managing editor Deborah Holmberg Schwartz. It then expanded into the national Canadian market in 1985. ''Herizons'' published monthly until 1987, then ceased publishing until 1992, when its doors were re-opened by two former staff. Shawna Dempsey
Shawna Dempsey and Lorri Millan are a Canadian performance art duo who, since 1989, have collaborated on performances, films, videos, publications and public art projects. Both out lesbians, Dempsey and Millan collaborate most commonly on humorous performances addressing lesbian and feminist themes in a variety of media, including film, video and live performance poetry. Dempsey and Millan are based out of Winnipeg, and have toured and performed worldwide. Their work has been featured in four retrospectives. Judy Rebick
Judy Rebick (born August 15, 1945) is a Canadian writer, journalist, political activist, and feminist. Early life Born in Reno, Nevada, Rebick and her family moved to Toronto when she was 9. She became a socialist activist in the 1970s, joining the Revolutionary Marxist Group. She was a member of its successor, the Revolutionary Workers League, and wrote articles for the RWL's newspaper, ''Socialist Voice'', until she left the organization in the early 1980s. Career 1980s Rebick first gained prominence in her role as spokesperson for the Ontario Coalition for Abortion Clinics, a pro-choice group, in the 1980s.
