Heritage Corridor
The Heritage Corridor (HC) is a Metra commuter rail line in Chicago, Illinois, and its southwestern suburbs, terminating in Joliet, Illinois. While Metra does not refer to its lines by colors, the Heritage Corridor appears on Metra timetables as "Alton Maroon," after the Alton Railroad, which ran trains on this route. The name Heritage Corridor refers to the Illinois and Michigan Canal Heritage Corridor. Established in 1984, it runs parallel to the line. Unlike other Metra lines, the Heritage Corridor runs during weekday rush hours only in the peak direction–to Chicago in the morning and Joliet in the afternoon. The Heritage Corridor takes less than 1 hour to reach Joliet, significantly faster than the Rock Island District which also serves Joliet. However, with the Fair Transit South Cook pilot program cutting Rock Island fares, a ticket from Joliet to Union Station via the Heritage Corridor is more expensive than a ticket from Joliet to on the Rock Island District. Commuter Rail
Commuter rail, or suburban rail, is a passenger rail transport service that primarily operates within a metropolitan area, connecting commuters to a central city from adjacent suburbs or commuter towns. Generally commuter rail systems are considered heavy rail, using electrified or diesel trains. Distance charges or zone pricing may be used. Summit (Amtrak Station)
Summit is an Amtrak and Metra train station in Summit, Illinois. It is served by Amtrak Illinois' ''Lincoln Service'', which operates daily, and Metra's Heritage Corridor commuter line, which operates only during morning and evening rush hours in peak direction. Amtrak's ''Texas Eagle'' trains also use these tracks but do not stop. It is away from Union Station, the northern terminus of the line. In Metra's zone-based fare system, Summit is in zone C. Summit is also the closest Metra (and Amtrak) station to Midway Airport. Summit is the only Metra station that is served by more Amtrak trains (four trains per direction throughout the day) than by Metra trains (three inbound morning and three outbound evening rush hour trains). Wolverine (train)
The ''Wolverine'' is a higher-speed passenger train service operated by Amtrak as part of its Michigan Services. The line provides three daily round-trips between Chicago and Pontiac, Michigan, via Ann Arbor and Detroit. It carries a heritage train name descended from the New York Central (Michigan Central). During fiscal year 2022, the ''Wolverine'' carried 367,254 passengers, a 138.6% increase from FY 2021's total of 153,923 passengers. Hiawatha Service
The ''Hiawatha Service'', or simply ''Hiawatha'', is an 86-mile (138 km) train route operated by Amtrak on the western shore of Lake Michigan between Chicago, Illinois and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. However, the name was historically applied to several different routes that extended across the Midwest and to the Pacific Ocean. As of 2007, twelve to fourteen trains (seven round-trips, six on Sunday) run daily between Chicago and Milwaukee, making intermediate stops in Glenview, Illinois, Sturtevant, Wisconsin, and Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport. The line is partially supported by funds from the state governments of Wisconsin and Illinois. The line utilizes the Soo Line Railroad (Canadian Pacific) C&M Subdivision. The service carried over 800,000 passengers in fiscal year 2011, a 4.7% increase over FY2010. Revenue during FY2011 totaled $14,953,873, a 6.1% increase over FY2010. Southwest Chief
The ''Southwest Chief'' (formerly the ''Southwest Limited'' and ''Super Chief'') is a passenger train operated by Amtrak on a route between Chicago and Los Angeles through the Midwest and Southwest via Kansas City, Albuquerque, and Flagstaff. Amtrak bills the route as one of its most scenic, with views of the Painted Desert and the Red Cliffs of Sedona, as well as the plains of Iowa, Kansas, and Colorado. During fiscal year 2019, the ''Southwest Chief'' carried 338,180 passengers, an increase of 2.1% from FY 2018. The route grossed in revenue during FY 2018, a 3.8% decrease from FY 2017.
