The Marshal of Brabant (''erfmaarschalk van Brabant/ maréchal-héreditaire de Brabant'') is a hereditary royal officeholder and chivalric title at the Court of Brabant. History During war the Marshal was responsible for the safekeeping of abbeys and citizens, who could become victims during the fights. In the late Middle Ages the Marshall took part in peace treaties. During the ceremonial he was present together with the council of war. In 1160 the Lords of Wesemael had the privilege of this ceremonial office. Lancelot II Schetz
Lancelot II Schetz , 2nd Count of Grobbendonk, baron of Wezemaal, lord of Durbuy, Tilburg, etc., was a Netherlandish nobleman and a military commander during the later stages of the Eighty Years' War. Schetz was the eldest son and heir of the celebrated commander Anthonie Schetz. In 1638 he held the rank of colonel and was military governor of Saint-Omer when the town was besieged by the French. Lancelot inherited his father's titles as count of Grobbendonk and baron of Wezemaal in 1641, and his mother's title to the lordship of Tilburg in 1650. He was lord of Durbuy through his marriage to Marguerite-Claire de Noyelles. He would later become governor of the Duchy of Limburg. He died in 1664. Anthonie II Schetz
Anthonie Schetz (1564, Antwerp - 1640 or 1641, Brussels), was a military commander in Spanish service during the Eighty Years' War. He was baron (and from 1637 count) of Grobbendonk, lord of Tilburg and Goirle, Pulle and Pulderbos, and Wezemaal. He was the military governor of 's-Hertogenbosch until the town was lost to the Dutch in 1629, captain of a cavalry regiment, and a knight of the order of Santiago. Life Early life The youngest son of Gaspard II Schetz and Catharina d'Ursel, of the noble Ursel family, and the younger brother of Conrad III Schetz, Anthonie was baptised in Antwerp in August 1564. Gaspar Schetz (1513–1580), Lord of Grobbendonk, Hereditary Marshal of Brabant was a financier and statesman in the Habsburg Netherlands. For reasons that are unknown he was nicknamed "Corvinus". Life Gaspar Schetz was born in Antwerp on 20 July 1513, the son of Erasmus II Schetz, Lord of Usbach and Grobbendonk, and Ida Van Rechtergem. Active in finance and commerce, he maintained a lively interest in literature. The House of Schetz or Schetz de Grobbendonk, originally House von Schetzenberg is a German Noble House. Most famous is the Flemish branch named Schetz, one of whose members became the first duke of Ursel. Origins It is believed that the origin of this family was in 13th-century Franconia, deriving from Schetzenberg or Schetzenberge. It is thought that Werner von Schetzenberge (died 1273), Herr von Polant und Schezsenberge, was one of the founders. Charles de Brimeu (1524 or 1525 – 1572 in Zwolle), was the last count of Megen, Meghem, lord of Humbercourt, of Houdain and Éperlecques. He was grandson of Guy of Brimeu, who was beheaded in Ghent. He became the last ceremonial Hereditary Marshal of Brabant of his family: he sold this ceremonial office to Gaspard II Schetz. Brimeu
Brimeu is a noble family, some members belonging to the Flemish aristocracy. Brimeux, previously in Flanders, is now in France. History The family originated from the county of Ponthieu. The oldest known member is Jean I of Brimeau, in whose memory his son, Jean II, knight, built a chapel in 1151. Five members of the House of Brimeu were Knights of the Golden Fleece. Amongst the lands owned we find Humbercourt, Chaulnes, Poederlee, Ligny, Meghen and Wesemael. Charles of Brimeu sold Wesemael to Gaspar Schetz, and it became the property to the house of Ursel.
