Heredia Railway Station
Heredia railway station is a staffed train station, managed by Incofer, located in the Heredia province of Costa Rica Station layout Two tracks at ground level with platforms on both sides. History The station building was built in the 1870s with :es:bahareque and structurally improved in 1905 by adding wood panels, it was used for freight and passenger transportation, and fell to disrepair in the middle of the 20th century. In 1992 the passenger service from the station towards San José was reestablished, which then in 1995 was stopped due to the closure of Incofer, and reopened for service again in 2009. The station received a major restoration effort between 2018 and 2019, financed by the local government, the Heredia municipality, at a cost of CRC ₡348 million, and designed by architects from the Costa Rica Institute of Technology. Heredia District
Heredia () is a district in the Heredia canton of Heredia province, Costa Rica. As the seat of the municipality of Heredia canton, it is awarded the status of city, and by virtue of being the city of the first canton, it is the Province Capital of Heredia province as well. It is 10 kilometers to the north of the country's capital, San José. The city is home to one of the largest colleges in Costa Rica, the National University of Costa Rica, which accepts many international students. History Prior to its founding, the area around Heredia was inhabited by the native tribe that is known as the Huetares, who were commanded at the coming of the Spanish by the ''Cacique'' Garabito. Heredia is a canton in the Heredia province of Costa Rica. The head city is in Heredia district, and is also the provincial capital of Heredia Province. History Heredia was created on 7 December 1848 by decree 167. Geography Heredia has an area of km² and a mean elevation of metres. Heredia () is a province of Costa Rica. It is in the north-central part of the country. As a result, the province covers areas as diverse as the agriculture-rich Northern plains to the more metropolitan areas such as the city of Heredia in the Central Valley. Interurbano Line (Costa Rica)
Interurbano Line ( es, Tren Interurbano), is a commuter railway line in Costa Rica, operated by the national public railway operator Incofer. The line connects the provinces of Alajuela, Heredia, San José and Cartago. History Costa Rica had two main lines for freight and passenger transportation, the Pacific line (between San José and Puntarenas) and the Atlantic line (between Alajuela, through Heredia and San José to Limón), both of which converge in the San José canton, with the eponymous terminus station of each line a mere 2 kilometer apart, which are connected by rail. Between 1993 and 1995 a brief passenger service made use of the tracks, but it was not enough to keep Incofer working, as the institution have been running in a deficit for a long time, for which it was technically closed in 1995. Atlántico Railway Station
Atlántico railway station ( es, Estación del Ferrocarril al Atlántico) is a railway station and historic building located in San José, Costa Rica, declared as Architectural Patrimony of Costa Rica by decree 11664-C of 29 July 1980. Built in 1908 and open until 1996, it was the main railway station between San José and Limón, where the main freight port is located. The emblematic building combines victorian, neoclassical, and baroque architectures, with some modernist details. In 2011, a restoration effort by the Ministry of Culture and Youth took place to reopen the station as a railway station for the urban train between the cantons of San José, Alajuela, Cartago, and Heredia. Rail transport in Costa Rica is primarily under the stewardship of Incofer (Instituto Costarricense de Ferrocarriles), an autonomous institution of the state. Incofer owns the national railway infrastructure and operates virtually all freight and passenger services, which consist primarily of commuter trains through the highly populated Central Valley. The whole Incofer network is narrow gauge, although there are several small tourist railways of other gauges. Unfortunately, much of the railway system requires major repairs.
