''Here, Beneath the North Star'' ( fi, Täällä Pohjantähden alla) is a 1968 Finnish drama film directed by Edvin Laine. It was entered into the 6th Moscow International Film Festival. The film is based on the first two volumes of Väinö Linna's novel trilogy '' Under the North Star''. The third volume was adapted into a film two years later under the title ''Akseli and Elina''. Plot Film begins the founding of the Koskela croft in the 1880s and tells the story of the life of the people of the imaginary Pentinkulma village until about 1920. The central theme is the unstable position of crofters and their goal to improve their living conditions. The rural upper class, such as the priestly family, and the poor people, whose socio-economic status is weaker than that of crofters, also play an important role. Edvin Laine
Edvin Laine (13 July 1905 – 18 November 1989) was a Finnish film director. Laine was born Bovellán. Laine directed a comedy '' Aaltoska orkaniseeraa'' and family film ''Sleeping Beauty'', both in 1949. '' The Unknown Soldier'', a film Laine directed in 1955 based on Väinö Linna's novel, was a big sensation in Finland. There have later been two other film adaptations of the same novel but Laine's version remains the best known. Laine also directed another film based on Väinö Linna's book, ''Here, Beneath the North Star'' (1968), which also was a successful movie in Finland. His 1958 film ''Sven Tuuva the Hero'' was entered into the 9th Berlin International Film Festival. Battle Of Syrjäntaka
Battle of Syrjäntaka was a 1918 Finnish Civil War battle fought 28–29 April in Syrjäntaka, Tuulos, between the German Baltic Sea Division and the Finnish Red Guards. Thousands of Red refugees were fleeing east, while they were blocked by a small unit of Germans in a highway crossing in the small village of Syrjäntaka. After hours of desperate fighting, the Reds managed to break through and continue their journey. Battle of Syrjäntaka and the preceding battle in Hauho were the only battles the Germans lost during their one-month military campaign in Finland. They were also the last Red victories of the Civil War. The battle itself was totally unnecessary. Matti Ranin
Matti Helge Ranin (21 November 1926 – 24 November 2013) was a Finnish actor. Ranin had an extensive career in film. He was in his prime as film-actor in the 1950s and 60s, most famously playing Captain Kariluoto in an Edvin Laine film '' The Unknown Soldier''. He also had a recurring role of Toivo Virta in the ''Inspector Palmu'' films and appeared as Lauri Salpakari in ''Here, Beneath the North Star'', the 1968 film adaption of Väinö Linna's novel trilogy '' Under the North Star''. Ranin has also acted extensively as a voice-over artist in children's audio books, cartoons and TV shows. He became known as the voice of the horse Histamiini, performed in puppet theatre style programming and based on the children's books by Raili Mikkanen. Esa Saario (born 22 November 1931) is a Finnish actor. He started studying in Helsinki Theatre Academy in 1956. The headmaster of the academy, Wilho Ilmari, and other teachers allowed Saario to skip one year of school due to Saario's giftedness. Saario ended up graduating in only two years. Career Saario worked as an actor for the Finnish National Theatre from 1958 until his retirement in 1997. The first role he played was in 1954 and the last in 2001.
