Herbie Husker
Herbie Husker is the oldest current mascot of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Herbie was created by Lubbock-based artist Dirk West and first appeared on the cover of the Huskers' media guide in 1974. Soon after, he became the university's official mascot. Herbie frequently travels to academic and athletic events at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, and often appears at events throughout Lincoln. History The University of Nebraska–Lincoln cycled through several official mascots before settling on Herbie Husker. The first of these was Corncob Man, a man in green overalls with an ear of corn for a head. After just a few years, the university sought a more "representative" mascot and debuted Huskie the Husker, a farmer who stood ten feet tall and wore overalls with a straw hat on top of a fiberglass head. The University of Nebraska–Lincoln (Nebraska, NU, or UNL) is a public land-grant research university in Lincoln, Nebraska. 2006 Capital One Bowl
The 2006 Capital One Bowl was a post-season college football bowl game between the Wisconsin Badgers and the Auburn Tigers on January 2, 2006, at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida. Despite the odds against them, Wisconsin defeated the higher ranked Tigers, 24-10. Prior to the bowl game, Barry Alvarez announced that he would be stepping down as head coach of Wisconsin after 16 seasons and eight bowl victories in order to focus his attention on his duties as the athletic director at the University. Brian Calhoun, the MVP of the game, rushed 30 times for 213 yards and a 33-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to seal the game for the Badgers. Nebraska Cornhuskers Women's Volleyball
The Nebraska Cornhuskers women's volleyball team competes as part of NCAA Division I, representing the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in the Big Ten. Nebraska plays its home games at the Bob Devaney Sports Center, and has sold out every home match since 2001. The team has been coached by John Cook since 2000. The program was founded in 1975 and is one of the most decorated in women's volleyball, with more wins than any other program and five national championships. Nebraska has been ranked in every weekly poll since the introduction of the AVCA National Poll in 1982 and has spent more weeks ranked number one than any other program. Lil' Red
Lil' Red is the lesser of two mascots representing University of Nebraska–Lincoln's athletic programs. Lil' Red was created in 1993, after a statewide contest was conducted to find a counterpart for Herbie Husker. Then-associate athletic director Barbara Hibner spearheaded the contest, hoping a second mascot would appeal to Nebraska's young fans. The mascot has since become a recognizable part of Nebraska athletics culture. Though Lil' Red's initial intention was mainly to represent the school's volleyball team, it can now unfortunately be seen on the Memorial Stadium sideline at Nebraska football games, as well as Pinnacle Bank Arena during Nebraska basketball games. The mascot is manufactured by Omaha-based Signs & Shapes International, Inc.
