Herbert Robinson (Western Australian Politician)
Herbert Robinson (29 December 1876 – 2 May 1919) was an Australian politician who was a Nationalist member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1917 until his death, representing the seat of Albany. Robinson was born in Red Hill, Victoria, to Irish parents, Margaret (née Thomson) and John Robinson. His family moved to Albany, Western Australia, in June 1878, where he spent his early childhood. He and his older brother, Robert Thomson Robinson (also a future MP), were both sent to Adelaide to be educated, attending Prince Alfred College. After leaving school, Robinson returned to Albany to work for Drew Robinson & Co., his father's department store. He eventually became a junior partner in the store. In November 1912, Robinson was elected Mayor of Albany, serving until November 1915. Western Australian Legislative Assembly
The Western Australian Legislative Assembly, or lower house, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Western Australia, an Australian state. The Parliament sits in Parliament House in the Western Australian capital, Perth. The Legislative Assembly today has 59 members, elected for four-year terms from single-member electoral districts. Members are elected using the preferential voting system. As with all other Australian states and territories, voting is compulsory for all Australian citizens over the legal voting age of 18. Katanning is a town located south-east of Perth, Western Australia on the Great Southern Highway. At the 2016 Australian census, 2016 census, Katanning had a population of 3,687. History The name ''Katanning'' is derived from the native name for a camping place. That native name for the camp was 'Kartannup' - 'Kart' meaning head and 'annup' meaning meeting or camping place. In the very early days before town settlement, a big tribe of natives lived in the area. When the tribe of another district would visit annually, Kartannup was the head camp or meeting place. In the 21st century, in one of the many possible examples of the attempted re-writing of history, some have tried to suggest that ''Kartanup'', means "clear pool of sweet water", or that ''Katanning'', means "spiders on your back". Electoral District Of Canning
The electoral district of Canning was an electorate in the state of Western Australia. The electorate, which was named for the Canning River which ran through it, was first contested at the 1897 election, but was abolished prior to the 1901 election, with most of its territory transferred to the new seat of South Perth. However, for the 1904 election, South Perth was abolished and Canning re-created. Canning was abolished for a second time in the 1988 redistribution. Canning covered much of Perth's inner southern region, being reduced progressively as suburban areas such as Applecross, South Perth, Victoria Park and Belmont developed and became populous enough to require their own electorates. The premier of Western Australia is the head of government of the state of Western Australia. The role of premier at a state level is similar to the role of the prime minister of Australia at a federal level.
