Herbert Hoover High School (Des Moines)
Herbert Hoover High School, usually referred to simply as ''Hoover High School'' or ''Hoover'', is a public secondary school located on the Northwest side of Des Moines, Iowa. It is one of five secondary schools under the district of the Des Moines Independent Community School District, and was named after Iowa native and the 31st United States president Herbert Hoover. The school's athletic teams are called the Huskies and compete in the CIML conference. In 2017, Hoover High reached half a century of existence. Students As of 2014, there were over 950 students enrolled at Hoover. Hoover has one of the most diverse student bodies of any high school in Iowa, having students that derive from dozens of countries. The secondary school typically has a graduating class of about 200 students a year. Herbert Hoover
Herbert Clark Hoover (August 10, 1874 – October 20, 1964) was an American politician who served as the 31st president of the United States from 1929 to 1933 and a member of the Republican Party, holding office during the onset of the Great Depression in the United States. A self-made man who became rich as a mining engineer, Hoover led the Commission for Relief in Belgium, served as the director of the U.S. Food Administration, and served as the U.S. Secretary of Commerce. The Washington Nationals are an American professional baseball team based in Washington, D.C.. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member of the National League (NL) East division. The Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) is the regulating body for male Iowa high school interscholastic athletics and is a full member of the National Federation of State High School Associations. Iowa High School Speech Association
The Iowa High School Speech Association (IHSSA) consists of member high schools from four districts in Iowa, United States, and offers three categories of competition: debate, large group, and individual events. At the end of each of the three contests, the Cooley Sweepstakes Trophy is awarded. To get to the all-state speech tournament, one must first proceed from the district and state tournaments. At district for speech, there is one judge (except for One Act Play, which has 3 judges) who issues ratings and every team or individual who receives a "I" goes on. Faculty Lounge is a band based in Des Moines, Iowa, created during Halloween of 2000 by bassist Dave Maxwell, guitarist Timm Pilcher, and drummer Mark Stallman. The band is made up of nine players, all of whom are either current or former teachers, coaches, and/or administrators in the Des Moines Public School system or surrounding area. The band has performed three times for President Barack Obama and several times for former Iowa Governor Chet Culver (a former teacher at Des Moines Hoover and Roosevelt High Schools) who proclaimed the band as, "The First Band of Iowa." Chester John Culver (born January 25, 1966) is an American politician who served one term as the 41st governor of Iowa, from 2007 to 2011.
