Herbert Edgar Haines (1880-1923) was a British composer of musicals and songs, including some pieces for silent films, in the early years of the 20th century. Haines's musicals, most by Ben Dauphinais, with lyrics by Charles H. The Catch Of The Season
''The Catch of the Season'' is an Edwardian musical comedy by Seymour Hicks and Cosmo Hamilton, with music by Herbert Haines and Evelyn Baker and lyrics by Charles H. Taylor, based on the fairy tale Cinderella. A debutante is engaged to a young aristocrat but loves a page. The musical premiered at the Vaudeville Theatre in London in 1904 and ran for 621 performances. It starred Hicks, Zena Dare and Camille Clifford. Replacements included Louie Pounds. The New York production, in 1905, starred Edna May, at Daly's Theatre. The show was produced internationally and was revived until the First World War. Synopsis Lady Caterham's stepdaughter Angela, who is a debutante about to 'come out' and is 'the catch of the season'. She becomes engaged to the young rake, Lord St. Jermyns, although she really loves the page, Bucket. ''The Beauty of Bath'' is a musical comedy with a book by Seymour Hicks and Cosmo Hamilton, lyrics by Charles H. Taylor (lyricist), C. H. Taylor and music by Herbert Haines; additional songs were provided by Jerome Kern (lyrics and music), F. Clifford Harris (lyrics) and P. G. Wodehouse (lyrics). Based loosely on the play ''David Garrick (play), David Garrick'', the story concerns a young woman from a noble family, who falls in love with an actor. She then meets a sailor who appears identical to the actor and mistakes him for the latter. Her father objects to a marriage with the actor, but when it turns out that she really loves the sailor, all objections fall away. The piece was produced by Charles Frohman, opened at the Aldwych Theatre on 19 March 1906, moved on 26 December 1906 to the newly built Gielgud Theatre, Hicks Theatre and ran for a total of 287 performances.
