Herbert Gardner, 1st Baron Burghclere
Herbert Colstoun Gardner, 1st Baron Burghclere, (9 June 1846 – 6 May 1921) was a British Liberal politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1885 until he was raised to the peerage in 1895. He served as President of the Board of Agriculture between 1892 and 1895. Early life Gardner was born on 9 June 1846. He was the son of Alan Gardner, 3rd Baron Gardner, by his second wife, the professional actress Juliah Sarah (née Fortescue). However, he was born two years before his parents' marriage and was consequently not allowed to succeed in the barony of Gardner on his father's death in 1883. Herbert Gardner (cricketer)
Herbert Wilson Gardner (15 January 1852 — 5 December 1924) was an English first-class cricketer and solicitor. The son of James Gardner, he was born at Rugeley in January 1852. He was educated at Rugby School, where he played for the school cricket team and was coached by Alfred Diver. He was described by ''Wisden'' during his time at Rugby as a batsman who "hit well and scored fast, and was a very good field at cover-point". He also played rackets for the school, winning the Public Schools Rackets Challenge Cup in 1870 alongside Thomas Pearson. After completing his education, Gardner was admitted as a solicitor in 1876 and practiced in Rugeley. He later played first-class cricket for the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) against Oxford University at Oxford in 1882. Batting twice in the match, he was dismissed for a single run in the MCC first innings by Edward Shaw, while in their second innings he was run out for the same score. Herbert George Gardner (December 28, 1934 – September 25, 2003), was an American commercial artist, cartoonist, playwright and screenwriter. Early life Born in Brooklyn, New York, Gardner was the son of a bar owner. His late brother, Robert Allen Gardner, was a professor of comparative psychology at the University of Nevada, Reno and is famous for teaming with his wife Beatrix Gardner on Project Washoe, the attempt to teach American Sign Language to a chimpanzee named Washoe. Comic strip Gardner was educated at New York's High School of Performing Arts, Carnegie-Mellon University and Antioch College. While a student at Antioch, he began drawing ''The Nebbishes''. The comic strip was picked up by the ''Chicago Tribune'' and syndicated to 60-75 major newspapers from 1959 to 1961.
