Herbert Butterworth (footballer, Born 1885)
Herbert Butterworth (September quarter 1902 – March quarter 1938) was an English professional footballer who played as a left half. He played nine matches in the Football League for Nelson and also assisted several non-league clubs. In 1929, he emigrated to Canada, but returned to England several years later. Biography Herbert Butterworth was born in 1902 in the village of Higham, Lancashire. During his early career as a footballer, he also worked as a weaver in various local factories. On 8 March 1929, he emigrated to Halifax, Nova Scotia on the liner ''Regina'' and later worked in Calgary for the Canadian Pacific Railway. Some time later, he returned to England and worked at the Trent Motors factory in Derby. Butterworth lived in Derby until his death in the early months of 1938, at the age of 35. Higham, Lancashire
Higham is a village in the Borough of Pendle in Lancashire, England, south of Pendle Hill. The civil parish is named Higham with West Close Booth. The village is north-east of Padiham and about south-west of Nelson along the A6068 road. According to the United Kingdom Census 2011, the parish has a population of 778, a decrease from 808 in the 2001 census. The parish adjoins the other Pendle parishes of Goldshaw Booth, Old Laund Booth and Reedley Hallows, the Burnley parishes of Ightenhill and Padiham, and the Ribble Valley parishes of Simonstone and Sabden. The area of the parish north of Stump Hall Road is part of the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Seedhill Football Ground
The Seedhill Football Ground was a football stadium in Nelson, Lancashire. It was the home of various incarnations of current North West Counties League Division One side Nelson F.C. from 1889, when the Burnley Express reported an opening senior fixture played against Burnley on March 16th 1889 (Lost 0-6), until 1971. During their tenure at Seedhill, Nelson were members of the English Football League between 1921 and 1931. Nelson's last game at Seedhill was a Lancashire Combination fixture on Sunday 28 March 1971 against local rivals, Clitheroe F.C. Local newspaper, the Nelson Leader, reported that a crowd of over a thousand gathered to see Clitheroe beaten by five goals to three in what was not only the last game but also the first Sunday game at the stadium. Nelson then moved to their current Victoria Park ground on Lomeshaye Holme for the start of the 1971–72 season. Ernie Braidwood
Ernest Braidwood (14 April 1895 – 16 July 1968) was an English professional footballer who played as a centre half. He started his senior career with Chesterfield Municipal before signing his first professional contract with Football League First Division side Oldham Athletic in August 1920. He made nine league appearances in his first season with the club and scored one goal, against Derby County. A change in manager for the 1921–22 season meant Braidwood found it difficult to break into the first-team, and he played only once in the campaign. In the summer of 1922 Braidwood was signed on a free transfer by his former Oldham teammate David Wilson, who had since become player-manager of Football League Third Division North outfit Nelson. He was inserted straight into the team for the first league match of the season, a 2–6 defeat away at Bradford Park Avenue. The Lancashire Combination was a football league founded in the North West of England in 1891–92. It absorbed the Lancashire League in 1903. Ambrose Harris
Ambrose Harris (29 October 1902 – 1952) was an English professional footballer who played in a number of positions, mainly as a half-back. He played in the Football League with Nelson, making almost 60 first-team appearances for the club in a four-year spell. He also played with several non-league sides throughout his career, including Barnoldswick Town.
