Herbert Behrens
Herbert Behrens (born 30 May 1954 in Osterholz-Scharmbeck) is a German trade unionist and politician of the party The Left (Germany), The Left. From 2009 to 2017, he was a member of the German Bundestag. Education and early career Herbert Behrens was born as the fourth of five children of a working-class family. After graduating from secondary school in 1970, he began an apprenticeship as typesetter and participated in the citizens' initiative "Garlstedter Heide". He then joined the German Communist Party (DKP), of which he remained a member until 1989. In 1972, he joined the trade union IG Druck und Papier and did volunteer work there. In 1981, he set up a nursery with other parents due to lack of childcare. In 1982, Behrens passed the non-final exam. Osterholz – Verden is an electoral constituency (German: ''Wahlkreis'') represented in the Bundestag. It elects one member via first-past-the-post voting. Under the current constituency numbering system, it is designated as constituency 34. It is located in northern Lower Saxony, comprising the districts of Osterholz and Verden. Osterholz – Verden was created for the inaugural 1949 federal election. It was abolished in 2002 and re-established in the 2009 federal election. 2017 German Federal Election
Federal elections were held in Germany on 24 September 2017 to elect the members of the 19th Bundestag. At stake were at least 598 seats in the Bundestag, as well as 111 overhang and leveling seats determined thereafter. The Christian Democratic Union of Germany and the Christian Social Union of Bavaria ( CDU/CSU), led by incumbent chancellor Angela Merkel, won the highest percentage of the vote with 33%, though it suffered a large swing against it of more than 8%. The Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) achieved its worst result since post-war Germany at 21%. Alternative for Germany (AfD), which was previously unrepresented in the Bundestag, became the third party in the Bundestag with 12.6% of the vote, whilst the Free Democratic Party (FDP) won 10.7% of the vote and returned to the Bundestag after losing all their seats in 2013.
