Her Bitter Cup
''Her Bitter Cup'' (alternate title ''A Heart's Crucible'') is a 1916 American silent film directed by Cleo Madison. One of only two feature-length films directed by Madison, she also played the leading role, a fervent labor organizer who uses drastic methods to finance her cause of improving the miserable lot of the workers in a factory. The film is presumed lost. Synopsis Factory worker Rethna (Madison) comes from an impoverished background. Her ''raison d'être'' is to improve the miserable lot of her fellow workers; her chief foe is the cruel factory-owner. Rethna begins a sexual relationship with Henry Burke (William Mong), the owner's disreputable son, and obtains money from him which she funnels to the workers, doing with Burke's money what she believes the Burkes ought to be doing anyway. Cleo Madison
Cleo Madison (born Lulu Bailey; March 26, 1883 – March 11, 1964) was a theatrical and silent film actress, screenwriter, producer, and director who was active in Hollywood during the silent era. Madison began her career on the stage. By 1910, she had begun performing as part of a theatre troupe known as the Santa Barbara Stock Company in California. In 1913, she was contracted by the Universal Film Manufacturing Company to begin appearing in feature films. Madison established a name for herself as an actress with performances in films such as ''The Trey o' Hearts'' (1914). She is also considered a pioneering female director with a number of shorts and two feature films, '' A Soul Enslaved'' (1916) and ''Her Bitter Cup'' (1916), to her credit. She made several efforts to set up a production company before leaving show business in 1924. She died from a heart attack in 1964 at the age of 80. The ''New York Clipper'', also known as ''The Clipper'', was a weekly entertainment newspaper published in New York City from 1853 to 1924. It covered many topics, including circuses, dance, music, the outdoors, sports, and theatre. It had a circulation of about 25,000. The publishers also produced the yearly ''New York Clipper Annual''. In 1924, ''The Clipper'' was absorbed into the entertainment journal ''Variety''. The ''Moving Picture World'' was an influential early trade journal for the American film industry, from 1907 to 1927. An industry powerhouse at its height, ''Moving Picture World'' frequently reiterated its independence from the film studios. In 1911, the magazine bought out ''Views and Film Index''.
