Heppia Conchiloba
''Heppia conchiloba'' (common soil ruby) is a gray to light brown squamulous to foliose terricolous (grows on soil) lichen that occurs in southwestern deserts of North America. The surface appears as if covered in a light dust (pruinose). The squamules are peltate (like shields attached from the lower surface), up to 8 mm in diameter. There are one to several apothecia per lobe, with reddish-brown urn-shaped (urceolate) to concave discs, immersed so as to appear like concave spots. Lichen spot tests are all negative. Lichinomycetes
Lichinales is the sole order of ascomycete fungi in the class Lichinomycetes. It contains three families: Gloeoheppiaceae (3 genera), Lichinaceae (43 genera), and Peltulaceae (1 genus). Most species are lichenized. Lichinales was proposed in 1986 by German lichenologists Aino Henssen and Burkhard Büdel. The class Lichinomycetes was created by Valérie Reeb, François Lutzoni and Claude Roux in 2004. A study published in late 2022 suggests that six classes of fungi, Candelariomycetes, Coniocybomycetes, Geoglossomycetes, Lichinomycetes, Sareomycetes, and Xylonomycetes, are all part of a clade that has a sister relationship with a clade containing Lecanoromycetes and Eurotiomycetes. Lichen Spot Test
A spot test in lichenology is a spot analysis used to help identify lichens. It is performed by placing a drop of a chemical on different parts of the lichen and noting the colour change (or lack thereof) associated with application of the chemical. The tests are routinely encountered in dichotomous keys for lichen species, and they take advantage of the wide array of lichen products produced by lichens and their uniqueness among taxa. As such, spot tests reveal the presence or absence of chemicals in various parts of a lichen. They were first proposed by the botanist William Nylander in 1866. A squamulose lichen is a lichen that is composed of small, often overlapping "scales" called squamules. If they are raised from the substrate and appear leafy, the lichen may appear to be a foliose lichen, but the underside does not have a "skin" ( cortex), as foliose lichens do.
