Henry Vaughan (1621–1695) was a Welsh physician and metaphysical poet. Henry Vaughan
Henry Vaughan (17 April 1621 – 23 April 1695) was a Welsh metaphysical poet, author and translator writing in English, and a medical physician. His religious poetry appeared in ''Silex Scintillans'' in 1650, with a second part in 1655.''Oxford Companion to English Literature'', s. v. Henry Vaughan. In 1646 his ''Poems, with the Tenth Satire of Juvenal Englished'' was published. Meanwhile he had been persuaded by reading the religious poet George Herbert to renounce "idle verse". The prose ''Mount of Olives'' and ''Solitary Devotions'' (1652) show his authenticity and depth of convictions. Two more volumes of secular verse followed, ostensibly without his sanction, but it is his religious verse that has been acclaimed. He also translated short moral and religious works and two medical works in prose. In the 1650s he began a lifelong medical practice. Bristol was a two-member constituency, used to elect members to the House of Commons in the Parliaments of England (to 1707), Great Britain (1707–1800) and the United Kingdom (from 1801). Carmarthen Boroughs (UK Parliament Constituency)
Carmarthen (Welsh: ''Caerfyrddin'') was the name of a parliamentary constituency in Wales which returned one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom between 1542 and 1997. It was named Carmarthen Boroughs from 1832 to 1918. At its abolition in 1997 it was replaced, partly by the new Carmarthen East and Dinefwr constituency and partly by Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire. History Because the seat contained mining areas in the valley of the River Gwendraeth (until the 1980s), much countryside and a high proportion of Welsh speakers, it was fertile territory for the Labour Party, the Conservatives and Plaid Cymru alike. Although the Conservatives never won the seat, they came within 1200 votes of doing so in 1983. Henry Vaughan (Welsh Politician, Born By 1586)
Sir Henry Vaughan the elder (by 1586 1660/61?) was a Welsh politician who sat in the House of Commons variously between 1621 and 1644. He was a Royalist leader during the English Civil War. Family and early life Vaughan was the sixth son of Walter Vaughan of Golden Grove, and his first wife Mary, daughter of Griffith Rice of Newton, Llandefaisant, Carmarthenshire. His date of birth is unknown, but assuming him to have been at least 21 in 1607, when he is recorded to have been appointed a deputy-coroner, he had been born by at least 1586. He was a younger brother of John Vaughan, 1st Earl of Carbery, and William Vaughan. Henry Vaughan married, at some point between 1609 and 1610, Sage, the daughter and heiress of John Gwyn William of Derwydd, Llandybie in Carmarthenshire, and the widow of Edward Rice of Newton. Sir Henry Vaughan the younger (1613 – 26 December 1676), of Derwydd, Llandybie in Carmarthenshire, was a Welsh Member of Parliament. He was the son of Sir Henry Vaughan the elder, a long-serving member of Parliament and leader of Royalist forces in Carmarthenshire during the English Civil War. Sir Henry had acquired the Derwydd estate by marriage to his wife Sage. Henry the younger also fought on the Royalist side during the Civil War. In April 1645, he was defeated by Cromwell in a minor engagement at Bampton in the Bush, and he was captured at Tenby in 1648. Sir Henry Halford Vaughan, or Harry (27 August 1811 – 19 April 1885), was an English historian, the Regius Professor of History at Oxford University, from 1848 to 1858. He was the son of Sir John Vaughan (1769–1839). In 1856 he married Adeline Maria Jackson (1831–1881), eldest sister of Julia Jackson. Two years later he retired to Upton Castle in Pembrokeshire. Henry Vaughan (architect)
Henry Vaughan (1845 – June 30, 1917) was a prolific and talented church architect who emigrated to America from England to bring the English Gothic style to the American branch of the Anglican Communion (the Episcopal Church). He was an apprentice under George Frederick Bodley and went on to great success popularizing the Gothic Revival style. Life Vaughan was born in Cheshire, England. When he was a child, his family relocated to Dollar, Clackmannanshire, Scotland. He attended Dollar Academy, and was awarded a bronze medal in art from the school in 1863. He then began his apprenticeship under Bodley, eventually becoming head draftsman at the firm of Bodley and Garner. In 1881, Vaughan came to America traveling on the ''Atlantic Clipper'' a packet owned by the Glidden and Williams Shipping Company - whose founder William T. Glidden lived in Newcastle, Maine.
