Henry Townsend (musician)
Henry "Mule" Townsend (born Henry Jesse James Townsend; October 27, 1909 – September 24, 2006) was an American blues singer, guitarist and pianist. Career Townsend was born Henry Jesse James Townsend in Shelby, Mississippi to Allen and Omelia Townsend. His father was a blues musician who played guitar and accordion. When Henry was young, his family moved near Cairo, Illinois. Henry left home at the age of nine because of his abusive father and hoboed his way to St. Louis, Missouri. He learned guitar while in his early teens from a locally renowned blues guitarist known as Dudlow Joe. With aspirations to earn a living with his guitar, Townsend also worked as an auto mechanic, a shoe shiner, a hotel manager, and a salesman. By the late 1920s he had begun touring and recording with the pianist Walter Davis and had acquired the nickname Mule, because he was sturdy in both physique and character. Henry Townsend (abt 1610/15–1695) was an early settler of the American Colonies. Early life Henry Townsend (1610/15-1695) was born to unknown parents. YDNA testing at the FamilyTree DNA Townsend Project on male descendants of both the Oyster Bay Townsends and Thomas Townsend (1694/5-1677) of Lynn, MA has conclusively proven there is no relationship between the two families. This long held and incorrect assumption that Thomas, barely 13 years older than the oldest brother John, was based on no evidence. John Townsend (abt 1608-1668) was the older brother of Henry and one of the original settlers of Flushing. Henry's younger brother was Richard Townsend (abt 1620-1670). Career Townsend settled in Flushing, where his brother John Townsend was granted a patent by Gov. Willem Kieft in 1645. Henry Townsend (1649–1703) was the son of Henry Townsend, an early settler of the American Colonies. Biography Henry Townsend (1649-1703) was the son of Henry Townsend who emigrated to the colonies from England. Eventually Henry Townsend settled in Oyster Bay, where his son Henry Townsend was raised. Townsend Society of America DNA testing project has established that the Oyster Bay family is not related to Thomas Townsend of Lynn, MA. The county of origin in England for Henry, John and Richard Townsend is not known. Henry Townsend married Deborah Underhill in 1677. Henry Townsend (missionary)
Henry Townsend (1815–1886) was an Anglican missionary in Nigeria. Ordained in England in 1842, Townsend set off for Sierra Leone, landing there that same year. After working there only a few months, he was transferred to the Yoruba mission. Career From 1846 to 1867, he based his mission in Abeokuta. Thomas Birch Freeman was actually the first European to enter Abeokuta. He arrived there on 11 December 1843. When he returned to Badagry on 24 December, he met Rev. Henry Townsend and they celebrated Christmas Day together sharing the Gospel in Badagry. According to Ajisafe, he was the first European person to enter Abeokuta, arriving there on 4 January 1843 and was 'given a grand reception' (Ajisafe 1924: 85).
