Sir Henry Thompson, 1st Baronet
Sir Henry Thompson, 1st Baronet, (6 August 1820 – 18 April 1904) was a British surgeon and polymath. His interest was particularly in the surgery of the genito-urinary tract. Medical career Thompson was born at Framlingham, Suffolk. His father wished him to enter business, but he was eventually (by 1848) able to enrol in the Medical School of University College London. He obtained his medical degree in 1851 with the highest honours in anatomy and surgery and set up a practice at 35 Wimpole Street in London, where he lived and worked until his death in 1904. In 1853 he was appointed assistant surgeon at University College Hospital, becoming full surgeon in 1863, professor of clinical surgery in 1866, and consulting surgeon in 1874. In 1884 he became professor of surgery and pathology in the Royal College of Surgeons. Henry Thompson (Medal Of Honor)
Henry Thompson was a United States Navy sailor and a recipient of the United States military's highest decoration, the Medal of Honor. Thompson joined the Navy and by June 27, 1878, was serving at the rank of seaman. At Mare Island, California, that day, he rescued a man from drowning, for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor. Thompson's official Medal of Honor citation reads: For rescuing a man from drowning at Mare Island, Calif., 27 June 1878. Henry Yates Thompson (15 December 1838 – 8 July 1928) was a British newspaper proprietor and collector of illuminated manuscripts. Life and career Yates Thompson was the eldest of five sons born to Samuel Henry Thompson, a banker from a leading family of Liverpool, and Elizabeth Yates, the eldest of five daughters of Joseph Brooks Yates, a West India merchant and antiquary. He was educated at Harrow and at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he won the Porson Prize for Greek verse and was a Cambridge Apostle. After graduation, Yates Thompson was called to the bar by Lincoln's Inn but never practiced, choosing instead to travel extensively throughout Europe and the United States, during which time witnessed the Second Battle of Chattanooga. Henry Adams Thompson
Henry Adams Thompson (March 23, 1837 – July 8, 1920) was an American prohibitionist and professor who was the vice-presidential nominee of the Prohibition Party in 1880. Thompson was a native of Pennsylvania, but he spent much of his career in Ohio. He became a member of the United Brethren church and taught mathematics at several United Brethren colleges in the Midwest. Thompson served as president of Otterbein University from 1872 to 1886. Much of his time as college president was devoted to improving the financial standing of the school during the economic depression that followed the Panic of 1873. Initially a Republican, he became an early member of the Prohibition Party. His attempt at election to the vice presidency in 1880, running on a ticket with Neal Dow of Maine, was the party's best showing to date, but they still placed a distant fourth to the eventual winners, James A. Richard Henry Thompson M.L.C. (20 July 1906 – 21 March 1964) was an Australian politician and Methodist Lay Preacher. He was born at Paeroa in New Zealand to miner Leslie Foster Thompson and Caroline Walker. His parents returned to Australia when he was two and he attended state schools before completing his education at Newington College (1922–1924). In his final year he was a member of the 1st XV Rugby, 1st VIII Rowing and 1st Debating Team. The Richard Thompson Memorial Debating Prize is awarded at Newington in his memory. After school he worked with Sun Newspapers Limited and later became a business consultant. Thompson was a Fellow of the Royal Economic Society and served as Chairman of City of Sydney Eisteddfod in 1946 and President of the Australian Debating Union from 1949 until 1964. Henry Thompson (MRCVS) (Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, 1836–1920) was a founder member of the Aspatria Agricultural Society, the Aspatria Agricultural Cooperative Society and the Aspatria Agricultural College. Early life and education Henry Thompson was born at Allonby, Cumberland, on 9 September 1836, the youngest of seven children, his father a poor country tailor, earned 9s (45p) per week. At the age of thirteen Thompson became apprentice to Joseph Slee, a Maryport druggist, working from four in the morning to nine in the evening. He later moved to Whitehaven to learn veterinary practice under John Fisher, the most qualified veterinary surgeon in Cumberland. Sir Henry Thompson (1625–1683) was an English merchant and politician. Life and politics Henry and his brother Edward Thompson were wine merchants of York. He was Lord Mayor of York in 1663, and was made a deputy lieutenant of the West Riding of Yorkshire in 1665. In 1668, Henry moved from York to a new country estate at Escrick, where he had been buying land for the past several years. After moving to Escrick, he briefly entered politics, and was a patron of Andrew Marvell. He moved once more before his death, to another estate at Long Marston, leaving Escrick to his eldest son. He was again Lord Mayor in 1672. By his first wife, Mary Thompson, he had no children. By his second, Jane Newton (d. 1661), he had one son, Henry Thompson (1659–1700), to whom he left Escrick.
