He was married to Catholic philanthropist Janet Tempest and was the father of the artist Annie Tempest. Tempest Family
The Tempest family was an English recusant family that originated in western Yorkshire (part of which is now eastern Lancashire) in the 12th century. Tempest baronets of Stella and Stanley, County Durham A branch of the Tempest family of Holmside, County Durham descended from Nicolas Tempest (1486–1539), described as of Stanley Byers and Stanley Parke, the fourth son of Robert Tempest and Anne Lambton of Holmside. The Stella branch of the family combined agricultural and mercantile interests with large scale involvement in the coal trade via Newcastle upon Tyne in the late 16th and 17th centuries, with many members being noted recusants, adherents to the old Catholic faith after the Reformation. Thomas Tempest (1530–1578) was the son of the above; he married Elizabeth Place of Halnaby, Yorkshire and was of Stanley. His eldest son: Sir Nicolas Tempest, 1st Baronet (1553–1625). Broughton Hall, North Yorkshire
Broughton is a village and civil parish in the Craven district of North Yorkshire, England. The village is on the A59 road approximately west of Skipton. The 2001 Census recorded a parish population of 81 increasing to 172 at the 2011 Census. Broughton Hall Broughton Hall is a Georgian country house centrally located in of landscaped grounds. The hall is a Grade I listed building and has been the seat of the Tempest Baronets for 900 years and, although the baronetcy is extinct, it is still run by a direct descendant of the Tempest family. A 14th-century document records the acquisition of a house, watermill and part of the manor of Broughton by Sir John Tempest. The pedimented end wings were added to the main structure for Stephen Tempest, 1809–11, to designs by William Atkinson. Sir Charles Tempest, Bt. Janet Tempest
Janet Evelyn Mary Tempest (née Longton; 1930- 25 December 2021) was an Argentine-born British landowner and Catholic philanthropist. She was the châtelaine of Broughton Hall, the seat of the Tempest family in North Yorkshire. A devout Catholic, she was a devotee of Mother Teresa, having met her in India. She volunteered internationally with the Missionaries of Charity and ran a clothing bank at Broughton Hall for the poor in Kolkata and in Eastern Europe. Tempest also funded the construction of an extension to St. Stephen's Catholic Primary School and Nursery in Skipton. In 2004, she sustained permanent injuries from falling off a camel while on safari in Kenya. Annie Tempest
Anne Valerie Tempest (born 22 August 1959), known as Annie Tempest, is a British artist, sculptor and cartoonist initially known for her cartoon strip ''The Yuppies'' which ran for seven years in the '' Daily Mail'', and now for her strip ''Tottering-by-Gently'' which has appeared in '' Country Life'' magazine since 1993. Family Tempest was born on 22 August 1959 in Zambia. She was the second of five children of Henry and Janet Tempest. Her father was the second son of the Tempests of Broughton Hall. When she was two, her family came back to England. She attended Rye St Antony School in Oxford and St Mary's School Ascot. In 1970, her father inherited the Broughton Hall estate in Yorkshire from his brother, and she draws on her memories of Broughton Hall in the ''Tottering By Gently'' comic strip.
