Henry Schenck Tanner
Henry Schenck Tanner (1786–1858), was an American cartographer, born in New York City. He produced ''A Geographical and Statistical Account of the Epidemic Cholera from its Commencement in India to its Entrance into the United States'' in 1832 in response to the worldwide cholera epidemic of 1817. Tanner wished to provide a geographic account of the spread of the disease, stating that other statistics concerning the epidemic were "given in such a loose and unconnected manner as to render a reference to them at once irksome and unprofitable." His publication included global, national and local maps, data tables showing number of deaths in different localities by country, and detailed maps of the United States and New York City with small red dots indicating points where the disease had broken out. Mexican–American War
The Mexican–American War, also known in the United States as the Mexican War and in Mexico as the (''United States intervention in Mexico''), was an armed conflict between the United States and Mexico from 1846 to 1848. It followed the 1845 American annexation of Texas, which Mexico still considered its territory. Mexico refused to recognize the Velasco treaty, because it was signed by President Antonio López de Santa Anna while he was captured by the Texan Army during the 1836 Texas Revolution. John Melish
John Melish (June 13, 1771 – December 30, 1822) was a Scottish mapmaker who published some of the earliest maps of the United States (US). In 1816 he created the first map of the United States extending to the Pacific Ocean. Early life Melish was born in Scotland on June 13, 1771. He worked under the tutelage of a cotton merchant in Glasgow and later tried to form his own cotton import-export company. Between 1806 and 1811, Melish made several trips to the United States, finally settling in Philadelphia in 1811. A year later, he published ''Travels through the United States of America, in the years 1806 & 1807, and 1809, 1810, & 1811'' documenting his voyages to the US with copious maps. Philadelphia Melish started his own map publishing company in Philadelphia. It was the first of its kind in the United States. Geologic mapping of Georgia is the creation of geologic maps, special-purpose maps made to show geological features, of the State of Georgia in the United States. Rock units or geologic strata are shown by colors or symbols to indicate where they are exposed at the surface. Structural features such as faults and shear zones are also shown.
