Henry Russell (musician)
Henry Russell (24 December 1812 or 1813 – 8 December 1900) was an English pianist, baritone singer and composer, born into a distinguished Jewish family. Biography Russell's career began in 1836, when at the age of 22 he traveled to the US and, in three seasons, earned no less a sum than £10,000. He subsequently lost this by investing in the United States Bank, which collapsed. Russell wrote the song "A Life on the Ocean Wave" and the tune to George Pope Morris's poe''Woodman, Spare that Tree''while living in the US from 1836 to 1841, before settling in London to produce musical extravaganzas until he retired in 1857. Many of his songs championed social causes like abolition, temperance, and reform of mental asylums. Russell was born in Sheerness, Kent, a great-nephew of the British Chief Rabbi Solomon Hirschel. Henry Russell (14 November 1871 – 11 October 1937) was an English impresario, conductor, director, and singing teacher. Early life Henry Ronald Russell was born in London, the son of Henry Russell, a composer, pianist, and baritone, and his partner (later wife) Hannah de Lara, an artist. He was the brother of the musician Sir Landon Ronald. Sir Henry Russell (8 August 1751 – 18 January 1836) was a British lawyer. He was made a Privy Counsellor in 1816, during the reign of George III. The Russell baronetcy of Swallowfield in Berkshire, was created in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom on 10 December 1812 for him. Russell was the Chief Justice of Bengal. Life Born at Dover, on 8 August 1751, he was the third son of Michael Russell (1711–1793) of Dover, by his wife Hannah, daughter of Henry Henshaw. Philip Yorke, 1st Earl of Hardwicke nominated him in 1763 to the foundation of the Charterhouse School, and he was educated there and at Queens' College, Cambridge (BA 1772, MA 1775). Having been admitted a member of Lincoln's Inn, 20 June 1768, he was appointed about 1775 by Lord Bathurst to a commissionership in bankruptcy; and was called to the bar on 7 July 1783. Sir Henry Russell, 2nd Baronet
Sir Henry Russell, 2nd Baronet (1783–1852), was the son of Sir Henry Russell, 1st Baronet and his wife, Anne Barbara Whitworth 1763-1814. Career in India He was appointed British Resident to the court of Pune in 1809. He was then appointed to the more important court of Hyderabad State from 1810 until 1820, when he retired to England. Russell was Private Secretary and assistant to James Achilles Kirkpatrick, British Resident at Hyderabad from 1798 until his death in 1805. Russell's career is discussed in some detail in William Dalrymple's 2002 history of British India, ''White Mughals'', where he figures as a gifted but weak diplomat who, following the death of his superior, Kirkpatrick, seduced then abandoned Kirkpatrick's widow and had a brief affair with her. Henry Patrick Marie, Count Russell-Killough (1834–1909) was one of the pioneers of Pyrenean exploration, known for his obsession with the Vignemale. Early life Russell's father was Thomas John Russell, who was feudal baron of Killough, County Down, and a relative of Charles Russell, later Baron Russell of Killowen. Thomas John Russell emigrated to France aged 22 to escape anti-Catholic discrimination in Ireland. He fought in the Papal Army in 1860 and was made a Papal Count in 1862. Henry was born in Toulouse to Thomas' second wife, Marie-Josephine-Aglaë-Ferdinande, daughter of the Marquis de Flamarens. Henry was educated in Ireland at Clongowes Wood College. Henry Russell undertook his first distant voyage at the age of 23, to North America. Henry Chamberlain Russell (17 March 1836 – 22 February 1907) was an Australian astronomer and meteorologist. Early life Russell was born at West Maitland, New South Wales, the fourth son of the Hon. Bourn Russell and his wife Jane, ''née'' Mackreth. Russell was educated at West Maitland Grammar school and the University of Sydney, ( BA, 1859). Sydney Observatory Russell joined the staff of the Sydney Observatory under William Scott who resigned in 1862. Russell then became acting director until 1864 until the new government astronomer, George Smalley, was appointed. On the death of Smalley on 11 July 1870 Russell became government astronomer a salary of £555 and held the position for 35 years. Henry Norris Russell ForMemRS HFRSE FRAS (October 25, 1877 – February 18, 1957) was an American astronomer who, along with Ejnar Hertzsprung, developed the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram (1910). In 1923, working with Frederick Saunders, he developed Russell–Saunders coupling, which is also known as LS coupling. Life Russell was born on 25 October 1877, at Oyster Bay, New York, the son of Rev Alexander Gatherer Russell (1845-1911) and his wife, Eliza Hoxie Norris. After graduating from George School in 1895, he studied astronomy at Princeton University, obtaining his B.A. In 1897 and his doctorate in 1899, studying under Charles Augustus Young. Henry Argue Russell (December 15, 1904 – November 9, 1986) was an American track and field athlete, winner of the gold medal in the 4 × 100 m relay at the 1928 Summer Olympics. A Cornell University student, Henry Russell won the IC4A championships in in 1926 and in in 1925 and 1926. Russell was elected to the Sphinx Head Society during his senior year. At the Amsterdam Olympics, Russell reached the semifinals in 100 m and ran the anchoring leg in the American 4 × 100 m relay team, which equalled the world record of 41.0 s, in the final. Andrew Ian Henry Russell, 15th Duke of Bedford (born 30 March 1962) is a British nobleman and peer. He is the son of Henry Robin Ian Russell, 14th Duke of Bedford, and his wife, Henrietta Tiarks. Biography Bedford was educated at Hall School, Hampstead and Heatherdown School, near Ascot in Berkshire, followed by Harrow School and Harvard, where he received his BA degree. He was known as Lord Howland until his grandfather's death in 2002, when he adopted the courtesy title Marquess of Tavistock, previously held by his father, Robin Russell, 14th Duke of Bedford. He succeeded to the Dukedom of Bedford the following year after his father suffered a fatal stroke. Henry Russell (politician)
Henry Robert Russell (13 January 1817 – 30 April 1891) was a notable New Zealand runholder and politician. He was baptised in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland on 11 February 1817. He was appointed to the New Zealand Legislative Council on 12 July 1862. His membership lapsed on 11 June 1885 after he had been absent for two sessions (he had travelled to England in 1883). He was considered to be the founder of Waipukurau, where he owned the Mount Herbert estate, to the east of the town. His brother, Thomas Purvis Russell, owned the neighbouring Woburn estate and they also owned runs near the Turanganui River in southern Wairarapa. He left an estate of £100,765. He died at Richmond in 1891 and his wife, Susanna Cobham Herbert, died at Waipukurau in 1910, aged 90.
